2018 OREGON HERITAGE CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHT – TOURS!

Mix up your 2018 conference experience with some Learning on the Go sessions! This year’s Heritage Conference includes the following tours to help inspire your heritage work:


-      Redmond Documenting & Preserving History (April 11): Learn how Redmond built community support and pulled off successful heritage projects. Explore the new city hall housed in the historic high school, and check out the new downtown historic district.

-      History in Prineville (April 11): This walking tour will include Prineville’s downtown district of historic homes dating back to the 1870s and a full tour, from the basement to the clock tower!, of the Crook County Courthouse built in 1909.

-      Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Tour (April 12): It’s the 25th anniversary of the Museum at Warm Spring! Explore the museum, the collections, the convergence of nature and culture, and learn about the Tribal Culture and Heritage Department’s award winning oral history and digitization program.

-      Thinking Outside the Box Factory: Lessons in Adaptive Reuse (April 13): Join the developer and architect of the historic, 102 year-old Box Factory for an insightful look at bringing a lumber mill building back to life.

-      Riley Ranch: From Abandoned Rach to Nature Reserve (April 13): Learn about interpretive opportunities including: local geology, early settlers, development in the late 1800s, native plants and animals, and Bend Park and Recreation’s decision not to allow dogs or bikes on the property.

PENDLETON PROGRAM FEATURING TRIPLE NICKELS AND THEIR SECRET MISSION IN PENDLETON

On Friday, March 2, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., Travel Information Council's Oregon Historical Marker Program, in partnership with Travel Pendleton and the Pendleton Air Museum will be hosting History Happy Hour at Oregon Grain Growers Distillery in Pendleton. The topic of discussion is the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion (also known as the Triple Nickles), an elite all-Black paratrooper unit deployed to Oregon near the end of WWII. The Triple Nickles jumped their way into Oregon history in 1945 during a secret mission known as "Operation Firefly.' The guest speaker will be Robert Bartlett, a professor from Eastern Washington University and a member of the Triple Nickel's Association. At this Happy Hour we will learn more about the Triple Nickel's history and how Pendleton played a role. We will also be discussing a location for a historical marker located in Pendleton to commemorate the 555th. This event is open to the public. OREGON ARCHIVES CRAWL 2018

The Oregon Archives Crawl date has been set for Saturday, October 20th!

The Portland Area Archivists have been organizing the Oregon Archives Crawl since 2010 as a way to introduce to the community the wealth of archival resources available in Oregon. The Crawl coincides with National Archives Month and is a celebration of archives and the people who preserve and make the resources available.

If you aren’t aware of how the Crawl works, here it is in a nutshell: approximately 30 heritage organizations with archival collections are hosted at 3 different sites in downtown Portland. Each organization is provided a table where they can exhibit materials. We then invite the public to move from one location to the other, getting introduced to many heritage organizations that they may not know about.  This is an excellent outreach opportunity. This year’s three host sites are the City of Portland Archives & Records Center, the Oregon Historical Society, and the Multnomah County Library (Central Branch).

To further our goal to make the Crawl as simple to orchestrate as possible, we are implementing an online form for participating organizations to complete. Please make sure you enter the information exactly as you want to see it on posters, directories, and other outreach.  Since we don’t always have the room to list all of our long organizational names, please provide an abbreviated form of your name that the public will recognize.

Please join us for the 4th annual Oregon Film History Conference on May 4, 2018, in Portland, Oregon. The conference is designed to showcase the complexity and diversity of Oregon film history for educators, historians, archivists, librarians, and museum professionals. It is small in size, and designed to encourage interdisciplinary engagement, open-ended conversation, and professional networking.

ATTEND AN OREGON TOURISM LISTENING SESSION IN YOUR REGION

Travel Oregon, in partnership with Oregon’s seven regional destination management organizations (RDMOs), invites you to join one of 10 Oregon Tourism Listening Sessions<https://t.e2ma.net/click/tm0ky/x162xs/tmgl9i> across the state this spring. We want to hear from anyone who touches the tourism industry, including business owners, land managers, volunteers, nonprofits, policymakers and more, as we value all perspectives and opinions.

Your input is very important. Listening session findings will help shape the future of tourism in Oregon through Travel Oregon’s statewide strategic plan, as well as each of the seven RDMOs’ regional plans. Session attendees will have the chance to meet their RDMO representative and Travel Oregon employees, learn about and provide input on your region's 2017-19 plans as well as the statewide 2019-21 strategic plan. All sessions are interactive. Attendees will be invited to partake in small group table exercises, provide input and share opinions. Sessions are three hours; food and beverages provided.
