ONE WEEK LEFT – Please take the COVID-19 Heritage Impact Survey!
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone and every organization in an unprecedented way. The extent of the impact is still unfolding. With current COVID-19 financial aid running out, we want to make sure that heritage is represented in any future recovery efforts, funding, and decision-making. In order to do that, we need data!
Overview
We will be sending out a total of three surveys over the course of the next 8 months to capture data from March 2020-June 2021 to understand the progression of impact and recovery. We need you to participate so we can capture as much information as possible. The information will be used in statewide disaster planning and shared with other heritage service agencies and organizations. We will only share specific organization information and stories with permission.
Who should take this survey?
Anyone that is dealing with heritage related activities in Oregon including, but not limited to, museums, historical societies, historic cemeteries, main streets, historic preservation, archaeology, genealogical societies, libraries with historical collections and archives, etc.
Survey Details
Now, because this information is so important, we are asking for a lot of it. This survey could take 20-30 minutes. While that seems like a long time, it is necessary to get this information so that we can relay the reality of how COVID-19 has impacted and continues to impact heritage into 2021. To help complete the survey faster, below is some of the information you might want to have on hand before starting the survey:
* Budget info for pre and during COVID-19, including financial information for March 2020- October 2020
* General staff info such as number of paid staff and duties and volunteer numbers and tasks pre and during COVID-19
* Attendance numbers pre and during COVID-19, general attendance and student groups
* Information on open hours and days of the week pre and during COVID-19
* Stories of impact during COVID-19
Thank you in advance for taking this survey and making your organization’s voice heard in future decision-making regarding COVID-19 recovery. If you have any questions about this survey or how the results will be used, please contact heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov> or call Katie Henry at (503) 877-8834.

Christmas Ships Parade designed an Oregon Heritage Tradition
The Christmas Ships Parade, a long-standing Oregon event, marks its upcoming 66th year with an Oregon Heritage Tradition designation by the Oregon Heritage Commission. Other Oregon Heritage Traditions include the Oregon State Fair, Medford’s Pear Blossom Festival, the Pendleton Round-Up, and the Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana.
The Christmas Ships Parade began with one decorated sailboat in 1954 and has since grown to over 70 participating boats. The entirely volunteer operated event runs for 15 nights during December and travels the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in the Portland Metro area providing opportunities for communities to view it from the river front, restaurants, parks, neighborhoods and waysides along the rivers. Several cities along the rivers have tied their holiday events to the parade schedule.
Volunteers dedicate over 3,000 hours in trainings, meetings, outreach, logistics, and the actual time in the parade. They host up to three meet and greet events at different locations where community members can see the boats up close, meet the boat owners, and learn about boat safety. Parade volunteers also partner with various charities throughout the year such as Fallen Firefighters, Ronald McDonald House, William Temple House, Portland Fire & Rescue Toy and Joy Makers, and Columbia River Fire & Rescue Toy N Joy and Holiday Hope.
This is an unusual year for Heritage Traditions. COVID-19 has forced many events to cancel or restructure for the first time in their 50+ year history. The only other time Oregon Heritage events have canceled has been due to WWI and WWII. This may be one of the few designated events that can safely proceed with their regular events with some minor safety modifications per state guidelines. While the parade will run as normal, all Meet & Greet events and open house activities are canceled for the 2020 parade season. As always, it is possible that individual parade night cancellations may occur due to unsafe weather conditions. This is unrelated to the pandemic. Notification of any cancellations will be posted at www.chistmas<http://www.chistmas> ships.org and social media channels.
More information can be found on their website at: www.christmasships.org<http://www.christmasships.org>.
An Oregon Heritage Tradition must have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years, demonstrate a public profile and reputation that distinguishes it from more routine events, and add to the livability and identity of the state. A list of Tradition designations is available at https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/pages/heritage-designations.aspx.

Oregon Heritage Seeking Consultant for Historic Property Survey & Disaster Preparedness Recommendation Report
Oregon Heritage, OPRD has partnered with the City of Cottage Grove, a Certified Local Government, to develop a Community Disaster Resilience Plan for Heritage Resources in the city. As part of this effort, we are seeking a professional historic preservation planning consultant to conduct reconnaissance-level historic built resources surveys in select areas of the City to identify potentially historic built resources and guide future planning efforts around disaster preparation. The consultant will analyze the data collected in the current survey, incorporate existing survey data generated from previous survey efforts, and, using the gathered historic property data and hazard maps provided by the City, provide a report that analyzes the new data along with existing data and makes recommendations on future actions the City may take regarding the protection of historic resources from natural hazards risks. If successful, his report will be a model for other communities.
Submissions are due by December 18, 5:00 p.m. Review the Request for Proposals<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/CottageGroveRLSDisasteranalysisreportRFPOPRDweb.pdf> for details. For additional information contact Kuri Gill<mailto:Kuri.gill at oregon.gov>, 503-383-6787.

Applications open for 2021 Oregon Century Farm designation
The Oregon Century Farm & Century Ranch Program is a statewide recognition program honoring farmers and ranchers who have worked the same land for at least 100 years. The program is administered through the Oregon Farm Bureau Foundation for Education and is partially funded through a partnership of the Oregon Farm Bureau, Wilco, Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, & OSU Libraries’ University Archives.
Since the start of the program in 1958, 1,235 farms and ranches across the state have been registered. Oregon has one of the oldest agricultural heritage programs of this type in the entire nation.
Successful applicants receive a certificate signed by the Governor. A durable metal road sign to identify their property as having historic Century Farm or Century Ranch status is also available. Additionally, each family is honored during a special ceremony and reception at the Oregon State Fair. A formal application process is required for properties to be considered for the program.

Beyond Allyship: Advocating for Latinx Heritage - Online event by Latinos in Heritage Conservation, Dec. 10
Beyond Allyship: Advocating for Latinx Heritage
Thursday, December 10
1:00 PST / 2:00 MST / 3:00 CST / 4:00 EST
Advocating for allyship and diversity is necessary, but not sufficient. What does dismantling structural racism and other oppressions look like in our work? And what actions can each sector―education, government, nonprofits, and private firms―take in creating and sustaining a more just field?
Learn how to move beyond allyship and become an advocate and partner in preserving Latinx history, places, and communities. A panel of scholars and practitioners will present experiences and strategies drawn from their respective careers in the profession. Attendees will also hear how Latinx/a/os are changing the business of saving places.
This event requires registration. All proceeds will benefit Latinos in Heritage Conservation’s paid internship program.
