Oregon Heritage/SHPO welcomes back Beth Dehn!

Oregon Heritage welcomes back Beth Dehn to our team in her new role as the Heritage Technical Resources Coordinator. Beth will provide support for the Oregon Main Street Network partners, coordinate the Oregon Heritage MentorCorps, organize workshops and technical documents, and work with the Heritage Outreach Bureau on communications.

In her former role with the agency, Beth was the Oregon Heritage Commission Coordinator. She held that position for over two years before losing it to seniority implications during OPRD's July 2020 lay offs caused by budget cutbacks from the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Before being reinstated, Beth became a mom and worked for the Oregon Transportation Commission.

Beth is a public folklorist with over 10 years of experience managing cultural programs in museums and educational settings. She originally came to Oregon Heritage from Road Scholar, an educational travel nonprofit for adults and intergenerational learners. Previously she served as the Director of Education at the Washington County Museum where she expanded the museum's community outreach and collaborated with Pacific University and local organizations on the Washington County Heritage Online project and Washington County Oral Histories digitization initiative. Beth also served as Educational Outreach Assistant at the Museum of Natural & Cultural History and has taught internationally through Fulbright and the JET Programme. Beth holds a BA in English & Spanish from Buena Vista University and an MA in Folklore from the University of Oregon with a Museum Studies Certificate.

Oregon Heritage Fellowship deadline extended to Nov. 15

Oregon Heritage will award up to three $2,000 fellowships to enrolled students of an Oregon university or college for researching, writing and presenting a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, or historic preservation in Oregon.

Fellowship recipients will present their research process and findings at the 2022 Oregon Heritage Conference, April 27-29, and may be invited to submit their project paper for possible publication in the Oregon Historical Quarterly. Fellows' research papers will also be posted on the Oregon Heritage website at www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org>.

The Oregon Heritage Fellowship is provided to encourage thoughtful inquiry of Oregon's heritage by emerging scholars. Many new topics remain to be studied, and fresh perspectives on current topics are needed to keep the exploration of Oregon's history fresh and relevant. The fellowship offers a financial incentive for these research efforts and an opportunity to publicly share what is learned with the heritage community. The hope is that these efforts will stimulate further inquiry and discussion, and even lead to broader distribution through publications and other media.

AASLH 2021 National Visitation Report available online

The 2021 National Visitation Report is now available from AASLH's Public History Research Lab. Assessing the impact of last year's disruptions, we found visitation to history organizations declined nearly 70 percent in 2020, affecting organizations of all types, all sizes, and in all regions. National Trust: Telling the Full History Preservation Fund

The Telling the Full History grant program<http://us.e-activist.com/page/email/click/10028/1035791?email=uyWQo1za%2Bo7xwd9snnp8zLHgVM6K8Nv%2F&campid=v6WN8sCOot2ZkArzVWMSmA==> provides $25,000 and $50,000 grants for humanities-based work to interpret and preserve historic places of importance to underrepresented communities including, but not limited to, women, immigrants, Asian Americans, Black Americans, Latinx Americans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and LGBTQ communities. Applications are due December 15.

Committee to review Oregon Heritage Grant applications

On November 18, 2021 the Oregon Heritage Grant Review committee will meet to score and rank the applications for the Oregon Heritage Grant program. The recommendations from the committee will be forwarded to the Oregon Heritage Commission for final review and approval on November 29, 2021. The review committee meeting will be held by teleconference at 9:00 a.m. interested parties must register through Zoom to receive access information. The meeting agenda<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/2021MuseumGrantCmteAgenda.pdf> includes grant information and discussion, the process is not open to public comment.

The Heritage Commission is comprised of nine people representing Oregon's heritage and geographical diversity who have been appointed by the Governor. There are nine advisory representatives from state agencies and statewide organizations. The mission of the Oregon Heritage Commission is to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon's heritage by ensuring coordination of heritage initiatives by public and private organizations; advocacy on its behalf; education of the public about its extent and value; and promotion and celebration of its diversity.

A Tribute to Veterans at the Capitol Showcases Service Flags, Uniforms

The annual A Tribute to Veterans event has moved to a weeklong exhibit at the Oregon State Capitol and will take place noon Monday, November 8 to noon Friday, November 12. The exhibit will include uniforms from each service branch with a biography of the person who served in the uniform, coming from the Veterans of Foreign Wars #661 Uniform Display Museum. Each uniform will be accompanied by the appropriate service flag, which are on loan from the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Capitol will also decorate the state seal in colors of the United States.

Due to public health concerns, the annual choral performance scheduled the day before the holiday and the color guard has been canceled this year.

The Capitol is closed on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11.

This is a free exhibit open to the public. Parking is metered around the Capitol. This event is part of the Capitol History Gateway Project produced by the Visitor Services Department and is funded by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.
