2022 Oregon Heritage Fellowship application deadline Oct. 29

Oregon Heritage will award up to three $2,000 fellowships to enrolled students of an Oregon university or college for researching, writing and presenting a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, or historic preservation in Oregon.

Fellowship recipients will present their research process and findings at the 2022 Oregon Heritage Conference, April 27-29, and may be invited to submit their project paper for possible publication in the Oregon Historical Quarterly. Fellows' research papers will also be posted on the Oregon Heritage website at www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org>.

The Oregon Heritage Fellowship is provided to encourage thoughtful inquiry of Oregon's heritage by emerging scholars. Many new topics remain to be studied, and fresh perspectives on current topics are needed to keep the exploration of Oregon's history fresh and relevant. The fellowship offers a financial incentive for these research efforts and an opportunity to publicly share what is learned with the heritage community. The hope is that these efforts will stimulate further inquiry and discussion, and even lead to broader distribution through publications and other media.

Those interested can find more information and apply here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/pages/awards.aspx#four>.

Those with questions can reach out to Katie Henry at 503-877-8834 or katie.henry at oregon.gov<mailto:katie.henry at oregon.gov>.

REALM research and resources: Respond to community needs

Review the latest COVID-19 research
Prepared by Battelle, this research briefing provides the latest research on COVID-19 vaccination, variant strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and ventilation that may affect building operations, policies, and procedures, including:

  * Vaccines: Racial and ethnic groups now have similar uptake in receiving vaccines (71% of White adults, 70% of Black adults, and 73% of Hispanic adults), but there are still large gaps based on partisanship, education level, age, and health insurance status.
  * Variants: Recent studies examining mask requirements in K-12 school settings have linked these requirements to lower COVID-19 pediatric case rates.

Learn more about Oregon archaeology this month!

October is Oregon Archaeology month. Below are some events happening that can help you learn more about archaeology in Oregon. If you have events related to archaeology in Oregon you'd like to let people know about, email heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov> and we can include them in the Heritage News during the month of October.

Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 4 - Museum on Natural and Cultural History,
Join a trio of museum scientists for a three-part conversation about Oregon archaeology-and what it reveals about the distant and not-so-distant past. On October 21, archaeologist Jaime Kennedy leads a discussion about how paleoethnobotanists interpret Indigenous People's relationships with foods in deep history. On October 28, archaeologist Andrew Boehm delves into the world of zooarchaeology, exploring what we can learn from animal bones at cultural sites. On November 4, historical archaeologist Chris Ruiz wraps up the series with a look at how artifacts, written records, and oral histories can inform our understanding of Oregon's more recent history. Each session will be paired with a brief reading to be completed by the participants ahead of time. We ask that participants commit to attending all three sessions. Register now at https://mnch.uoregon.edu/learn/conversations-curious. The museum is committed to making the program as accessible as possible and offers a sliding scale registration fee of $20 to $60.

AAM releases Museums and Trust 2021

Museums have always been some of the most trusted US institutions. To examine whether that trust has endured the challenges of the past two years, the American Alliance of Museums teamed up with Wilkening Consulting to ask the American public whether and why they trust US museums today. The results are summarized in the latest report Museums and Trust 2021.
