Celebrating 150th Anniversary of the Saling & Reese Building in Weston
Bernice Charlton, owner of the historic Saling & Reese Building in Weston located at 201 E. Main Street, will host an Open House to celebrate the 150-year milestone on Saturday, October 26 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The public is invited to attend.
The Saling & Reese building was constructed in 1874 by Isham Saling and Isham Reese who were partners in the mercantile store housed in their building. It is the oldest building in Weston's downtown. The owner of the brickyard, H.B Nelson's home on North Broad Street is the oldest building in Weston.
Brick manufactured by the Weston Brickyard was used to construct the building and many of the other brick buildings downtown and around Weston.
It is the key anchor to the downtown Historic Commercial District located on Weston's Main Street. Today, it houses the Long Branch Café & Saloon which is also owned by Bernice Charlton for the past 30+ years. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the Historic Commercial District which includes Main Street from Water Street to Broad Street.
Isham Saling and Isham Reese bought and sold to the local people everything that was needed to homestead in the new community.
The building has survived three fires: 1874, 1883, and most recently in 2021. The most recent fire was devastating and closed the restaurant for a year while the owner worked to restore the building and reopen in time for the Pendleton Roundup.
Weston Public Library has the original ledgers for public viewing. The ledgers may give researchers a lead on their ancestors. The shelves in the Long Branch Café & Saloon now contain many new and old items such as salt and pepper shakers and plates and cups. Some are reproductions while some were donated by the pioneers of the valley.
Restoration work is still being conducted on the exterior of the building. The East and North walls had missing bricks and damaged bricks replaced and loose bricks tuckpointed. The West wall is still waiting for additional funding in the amount of $45,000. Once this wall is completed, the building will be fully stabilized. The work was funded through the 2023 Oregon Main Street Program Revitalization Grant received by the Weston Area Development Association (WADA). The brick restoration has been conducted by Pioneer Waterproofing, Tigard.
Some exterior work on the wooden structure is yet to be completed. That entails scraping and painting the wood siding for now. There are future plans to work on the façade of the building returning it to its original façade of large windows across the front of the building.
