Oregon's Cultural Items Taskforce begins to work with museums and K12 school districts

In 2024, Governor Kotek reconvened the Cultural Items Task Force<https://www.oregon.gov/gov/eo/eo-24-06.pdf>, with the goal of obtaining information relating to tribal cultural items currently held in Oregon repositories<https://www.oregon.gov/gov/policies/pages/tribal-cultural-items-task-force.aspx>. In addition to state agencies, public universities, and community colleges, the Task Force is also asking K12 school districts and museums to join in this important work.

Please use this link<https://files.oprd.oregon.gov/index.php/s/ziYTmAQLKAK8boJ> to view a letter from the governor, requesting the assistance of Oregon museums. The letter will be emailed and mailed to museums across the state.

The first step is to identify museum liaisons to the Task Force; the contact's name and information can be reported to naomi.allen at oregon.gov<mailto:naomi.allen at oregon.gov>. In the coming months, the liaison will receive information about trainings, surveying tools and resources, and a proposed timeline.

Members of the Task Force will be presenting at the 2026 Oregon Heritage Conference on April 30, in a panel session titled, "Task Force on Oregon Tribal Cultural Items: History, Goals, Impact, and YOU." Additionally, you are welcome to contact the Task Force co-chair, Danny Santos at dpsantos1952 at gmail.com<mailto:dpsantos1952 at gmail.com> with questions.

The Museum Learning Hub<https://museum-hub.org/learning-modules/> began as a nationwide initiative organized by the six U.S. regional museum associations<https://museum-hub.org/partners/> and dedicated to providing free, self-paced training resources for small museums. The inaugural series of online trainings and resource toolkits focused on digital media and technology topics and was made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services<https://www.imls.gov/> National Leadership Grant for Museums.

The Workplace Transformation Through Management Training Initiative, funded by a National Leadership Grant for Museums award from IMLS<https://westmuse.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=292ba30672daddc0764d36f0a&id=779c4b2819&e=f4886bfe41>, will expand current offerings to include online workshops and resources to build the capacity of frontline and middle managers.

This initiative will produce 24 training sessions/workshops organized into six (6) online training modules for publication on the Museum Learning Hub, along with six (6) toolkits. Topics to be covered in the series include:

  *   Introduction to Management
  * Interpersonal Relations, Wellbeing and Self-Care
