Portland's historic cemeteries are underexplored cultural treasures. From a photographer who captured the Golden Age of Broadway musicals to a celebrity orangutan, Portland's graves are full of surprises. In Historic Cemeteries of Portland, Oregon, cemetery sleuths Teresa Bergen and Heide Davis explore 25 places of interment from the 1850s on. The book features remarkable tombstones and a cross-section of the Portlanders they commemorate, including suffragists, spiritualists, Romani kings, politicians and murderers. Part history book, part travel guide, readers will come away with a new appreciation for cemeteries and an eerie tale or two.

The authors are hosting a book launch on Saturday, September 25 from noon to 3 PM in Laurelhurst Park, Picnic Area A. Several other Arcadia Press authors whose books came out during the pandemic will also be showing off their recent publications: Rhys Scholes with Portland's Hawthorne Boulevard, Steve and Judi Graeper with Rhododendron, and Donald Nelson with St. Johns and the North Portland Peninsula. History buffs are invited to stop by this dog-friendly event. Snacks provided, masks and social distancing encouraged.
