Good morning all,

We are excited to announce a new resource, Patient Navigation for People Who Use Drugs: Overview and Recommendations from a CDC-funded Demonstration Project<https://nastad.org/patient-navigation-PWUD>. This microsite houses background, approaches, materials, and recommendations from the Patient Navigation Programs at Syringe Services Programs (SSPs) Demonstration Project<https://nastad.org/blog/demonstration-project-summary-ssp-patient-navigation>, which facilitated the co-location of comprehensive navigation services at harm reduction programs.

This microsite is intended to be a resource and reference for public health programs that fund or facilitate patient navigation, harm reduction organizations and SSPs exploring or operating navigation services, and allied organizations interested in learning more about access and barriers to services for people who use drugs.

Please see below for more information, share the microsite with interested networks, and contact DrugUserHealthTA at NASTAD.org<mailto:DrugUserHealthTA at NASTAD.org> if you have any questions.

Thanks!

RE: New Resource: Patient Navigation for People Who Use Drugs Microsite

NASTAD is excited to announce the release of a new resource, Patient Navigation for People Who Use Drugs: Overview and Recommendations from a CDC-funded Demonstration Project<https://nastad.org/patient-navigation-PWUD>. This microsite houses background, approaches, materials, and recommendations from the Patient Navigation Programs at Syringe Services Programs (SSPs) Demonstration Project<https://nastad.org/blog/demonstration-project-summary-ssp-patient-navigation>, which facilitated the co-location of comprehensive navigation services at harm reduction programs.

Participating project sites, based at eight syringe services programs around the country, successfully demonstrated the transformative effect that patient navigation and compassionate, harm reduction-based engagement can have for criminalized and marginalized people. During the two-year project, patient navigators worked with more than 1,150 participants and documented more than 1,000 connections to testing and care for hepatitis C and HIV and to evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders. Project sites also documented navigation to emergency and long-term shelter, health insurance, personal identification services, and nutrition programs. The project period coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread closure of medical and social services, and the selected navigation programs became instrumental in providing health information, personal protective equipment, and support in accessing care to SSP participants. Sites also shared valuable lessons, experiences, and feedback in real time with NASTAD and CDC partners over the course of the project, informing public health guidance and technical assistance related to comprehensive drug user health and COVID-era approaches for health departments, harm reduction organizations and SSPs, and other partners.

This microsite is intended to be a resource and reference for public health programs that fund or facilitate patient navigation, harm reduction organizations and SSPs exploring or operating navigation services, and allied organizations interested in learning more about access and barriers to services for people who use drugs.

Thank you for your assistance in sharing this resource with any colleagues or partners who may find it helpful.

Please contact Drug User Health at DrugUserHealthTA at NASTAD.org<mailto:DrugUserHealthTA at NASTAD.org> with questions or recommendations.
