Listening Sessions: Syndemic Approaches at LHDs
NACCHO will be hosting 2-3 listening sessions with local health departments (LHDs) in early February to understand opportunities for advancing syndemic approaches to address the intersecting epidemics of HIV, STIs, hepatitis, overdose, and/or tuberculosis. Sign up here<https://naccho.mmsend.com/link.cfm?r=hE4OeZhjo47sDm_WsUY6Qw~~&pe=HEng-SUkSjIvy818cLHWIhtGMksZAQXEOJ_0msGMpILrHPlxgK_Xw5rDIVpPqUlYH21MK2PeJDgca7hK3L9M6Q~~&t=AeRZ0B55UsH4hTP0XU125Q~~> to share your health department's experience.

The listening sessions will seek to address the following objectives:

  * What are core components of a syndemic approach at LHDs?
  * How can LHDs leverage partnerships and policy (local, internal/organizational) solutions to advance syndemic approaches?
Depending on interest from LHD participants, the listening sessions may also seek to explore the following topics through breakout groups:

  * Strategies for braiding funding and other resources
  * Person-center strategies to address inequities
  *   State and local policy
  * Organizational policy (e.g., protocols and policies related to service delivery; staff roles, training, and competencies; hiring and onboarding; budget management, procurement, contracting)
If you are interested in participating, please complete this brief form<https://naccho.mmsend.com/link.cfm?r=hE4OeZhjo47sDm_WsUY6Qw~~&pe=axDC9l3fJU4SnI1e03I2L9gnkh9vGAQ8bUdzzEIE0Z4ZM8uE5p-ocjNWRrM0wQDHCsthaTeZ97emZ0q9k6QmIA~~&t=AeRZ0B55UsH4hTP0XU125Q~~> by end of day, Friday, January 31st. PrEP for People Experiencing Homelessness Series

While many HIV care providers are offering vital PrEP services, over half of those providers (52%) acknowledged the urgent need to enhance HIV prevention outreach and engagement efforts for people experiencing homelessness (PEH), ranking them as the top demographic requiring immediate attention. For PrEP to be sustainable, providers must understand the specific needs and concerns of their PrEP patients who are experiencing housing instability.

To educate healthcare professionals on delivering equitable and individualized PrEP care to PEH, and improving PrEP uptake and adherence among PEH, HealthHIV's two-part webinar series, "PrEP for People Experiencing Homelessness: From Outreach to Adherence," is now available on-demand. This webinar series engages healthcare professionals (clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and other allied health workers) in discussions around clinical and structural interventions for engaging PEH in PrEP.

Target Audience

HIV care providers, primary care providers, nurse practitioners, physician associates, other clinicians, and other healthcare professionals in primary care, HIV care, and STD clinic settings involved in the care of patients living with and at risk for HIV.

Continuing Education

A total of 1.25 credits/contact hours is only available for completion of the on-demand "Improving Equity in PrEP for PEH Through Structural Interventions" webinar for physicians, physician associates, nurses, social workers, and pharmacists.

Special Considerations for PrEP Care Among PEH

This 60-minute on-demand webinar features two experts who discuss the unique challenges, opportunities, and strategies for outreach and engagement of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in PrEP services. The experts share model practices, highlight patient case examples, and discuss strategies for engaging PEH in PrEP, such as PrEP medication adherence and persistence, adherence to medical appointments, and addressing common comorbidities.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
* Describe barriers people experiencing homelessness (PEH) face to initiating and adhering to PrEP and how providers and navigators can address these challenges.
* Identify culturally competent strategies and messaging for engaging PEH in PrEP.
* Summarize best practices for providing support to initiate PrEP, such as access to PrEP medication, labs and clinic visits for people experiencing homelessness (PEH).
* Identify collaborative strategies for interdisciplinary teams to guide PEH in their use of PrEP.

Improving Equity in PrEP for PEH Through Structural Interventions

Over the course of this 75-minute on-demand webinar, faculty discuss structural interventions to enhance engagement of PEH in PrEP care and improve equity in PrEP access. This webinar includes faculty that have applied innovative models for PrEP care among PEH, such as mobile healthcare or street medicine and pharmacy-based models, and faculty with experience advocating for housing for people living with or at risk for HIV. Faculty discuss how expanded referral relationships and partnerships in the community with housing assistance/providers can improve equity in PrEP access for PEH.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
* Identify structural barriers people experiencing homelessness (PEH) face in initiating and adhering to PrEP.
* Summarize care models to reduce barriers to PrEP, such as mobile healthcare, street medicine, and pharmacy services.
* Construct an interdisciplinary care team approach that includes partnerships with social support services to support PEH in PrEP care.
