Introducing Health Equity News You Can Use

In an effort to promote agency-wide discussion and learning, the PHD Health Equity Work Group (HEWG) will be sending out a monthly Health Equity News You Can Use email with resources for you and your work. Resources, tools, videos, and articles will be shared, as well as events or trainings when appropriate.

During February, the HEWG’s conversations focused on defining our role in workforce diversity, and coordinating the activities that we’d like to undertake with staff from Human Resources, Office of Equity and Inclusion, center administrators, and the division Director’s Office. We are making a greater effort to keep our web page updated (thanks to Brad Beauchamp!), so please check that page for more information on our meetings.

The Coalition of Communities of Color created a tool for organizational self-assessment related to racial equity in 2014 that quite a few sections have used within the Public Health Division to refine their health equity work and to lead with race.

Along with the tool, in collaboration with the Center to Advance Racial Equity the Coalition of Communities of Color developed a Protocol for Culturally Responsive Organizations to “assist their assessment and improvement process to advance their cultural responsiveness.”

On Feb. 15, OHSU livestreamed the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health event: Student Voices: Racism & Public Health. With an introduction by Dr. David Bangsberg, it is a fitting follow-up to our PHD All Staff meeting held at the end of January.

Lastly, Lewis & Clark is the site for Portland United Against Hate’s Training Series offered by the Center for Community Engagement from March through June.

If you have any health equity resources you want to share, please email it to one of the PHD Health Equity Work Group members along with a short description. Looking forward to moving this work forward.

Thanks for learning with us! Please contact Kati Moseley (katarina.moseley at state.or.us<mailto:katarina.moseley at state.or.us>) and Tim Noe (timothy.d.noe at state.or.us<mailto:timothy.d.noe at state.or.us>) with any questions or concerns. Or, feel free to reach out to a HEWG member from your section or program.

Thank you,
