Libraries in Clackamas County offer what we call Institution cards. The application requires a primary contact (teacher, staff, etc.) and an administrator of the facility. The application process requires a letter printed on business letterhead stating the institution contacts. The card types receive six week checkouts (longer than our general patron library cards), accrue no late fees, and have a borrowing limit of 160 items. The accounts are blocked when their fines exceed $150. Account privileges expire June 30 each year.

North Douglas Library District does this for all in-district students. Student cards are created at any time during the school year and are tied to either the teacher or an administrator for contact purposes only. This allows all children in the district to have a card without parent or guardian signature. Student cards are limited to two checkouts. We do have the ability to override for students to check out more. In the nearly seven years since we offered this, we have lost three books. If a student is missing a book their card will still check out one book at a time. If they don't return the book by the following September they start over.

Hello,
Do any public libraries in Oregon offer institutional library cards,
such as for schools? For instance, a school could borrow books from a
public library as an institution instead of as an individual employee or
be the guarantor on a student's account instead of a parent. If so, how
does that work at your library?
Lower Umpqua Library is in the early stages of arranging lending
agreements with local schools and we're trying to figure out how this is
handled by other libraries.
Thank you,
