[Libs-Or] Adults included in Summer Reading Program

We've been offering our summer program to all ages since I've been here. We schedule weekly events for adults only. Incentives are open to any participant on an equal basis. We don't have many adults who pursue incentives, or they obtain them for minor family members.
I like rewarding all of the patrons for reading. I also believe that the more adults we have in the community reading the more role models we have for the kids to encourage them to be lifelong readers.

We had an adult summer reading program in the last few years but last year, participation dropped considerably so chose not to have the program this year.  We had a few people ask about the program but not many.

Each week we had a drawing for a different item. Participants were given a ticket for each book they read that week. We had a variety of items from baskets, glass vases and bowls, and gift cards to local restaurants and coffee shops. Our community has a large number of retirees and their comments when asked if they wanted tickets for the drawing was that they had enough “stuff”.

I think adult reading programs are important but rethink on the incentives given.
