September 16th, 10am - 12pm - Back To School: The Who, What, When, Where and How of Working with Schools to Advocate for Survivors, Prevention, and a Collaborative Approach to Health Education
This presentation will give advocates tools to work most effectively with schools to best support survivors who are experiencing domestic, dating or sexual violence. School systems are also a great place to advocate for more trauma-informed policies, and a proactive approach to health education, aiming at changing socio-cultural norms that support violence occurring. We'll look at what policies are in place to support survivors and advocates in this process, and what's being done in Multnomah County to enact these policies and work toward prevention-from legislation to programs to what's being taught to promote healthy relationships and healthy sexuality.

BJA and IACP Issue Groundbreaking Report
BJA, in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), released a seminal model policy regarding police interaction with children who are impacted when a parent is arrested and law enforcement carries out its investigative and arrest responsibilities.
Reflecting the collective input of a wide range of subject-matter experts and stakeholders, and understanding that interactions between children and law enforcement create lasting impressions, the resulting model policy, Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents, provides strategies for law enforcement to improve their procedures and positively impact the communities they serve. "Police officers are confronted with significant challenges and responsibilities when children are present or in need of care and supervision following the arrest of a parent," said BJA Director Denise E. O'Donnell. "We are pleased to partner with IACP on a new model policy that provides sound, practical, and child-focused guidance on how police can join with their community partners to best meet the needs of children in these difficult circumstances."
Law enforcement agencies can use the model policy as a resource and guide as they seek to enhance their policies and procedures and gain understanding about the trauma children experience when law enforcement carries out its investigative and arrest responsibilities.

A Guide for Health Care Providers regarding CSEC from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention:
Health care professionals frequently come into contact with youth who have past, ongoing, or potential sexual exploitation for commercial purposes or sex trafficking victimization. However, according to the 2013 report from the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States, the United States is in the early stages of recognizing, understanding, and developing solutions to prevent these crimes. A new supplement to the report Guide for the Health Care Sector<http://www.iom.edu/sextraffickinghealthcareguide> is designed for use by health care professionals and in settings where youth are treated for injury and illness or taught about prevention. The guide includes key terms, risk factors and consequences, barriers to identifying victims and survivors, current practices, and recommendations. This project was funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Share the guide<http://www.iom.edu/sextraffickinghealthcareguide> and other resources<http://www.iom.edu/sextraffickingresources> from the report.
Ann Seymour reports in her latest "Monday Missive": I am working closely with Georgia DJJ on developing a protocol for a center to response to commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), and this Guide has been a gold mine for me!
Also From Ann Seymour's "Monday Missives":
This month's Missing and Exploited Children's Program newsletter focuses on help children with complex communications needs. You can access the excellent article and view the recording of a recent webinar on this subject at http://mecptraining.org/aug2014newsletter/.
