October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
During the month of October, we recognize the children, individuals, and families who are hurt daily by the hidden scourge of domestic violence. Domestic violence touches every segment of society with consequences that can last a lifetime. Exposure to violence can lead to a host of trauma-related problems that affect emotions, behavior, learning, and health.

Statistics show that 30 million children in the United States will be exposed to some type of family violence before the age of 17 and that child maltreatment frequently coexists with domestic violence. It is important for child welfare professionals and those who work with victims of domestic violence to understand the overlap between the two fields, the impact of violence on children, and practices to prevent and respond to abuse.

Child Welfare Information Gateway has a suite of bulletins and resources to help professionals better serve children and families affected by domestic violence. Visit the Domestic Violence web section<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/316463/3228489/20675/2/> for comprehensive information on prevention, assessment, treatment services, casework practice, cross-system collaboration, and resources for families.

Information Gateway has several publications to help professionals and families gain a better understanding of how child welfare and domestic violence intersect, including:
