New Practices and Research on Child Protection and Domestic Violence

A newly revised field manual, Child Protection in Families Experiencing Domestic Violence<https://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/389923/3684339/40836/2/>, is now available. The manual reflects recent practice innovations, the latest research and data, and a greater emphasis on family preservation and in-home services.

The comprehensive user manual informs child protective services (CPS) workers, supervisors, and related professionals on multiple issues related to the co-occurrence of child maltreatment and domestic violence. The newly revised edition reflects the Children's Bureau commitment to a collaborative and community-based approach to child protection and offers guidance on:

  * Ensuring the safety of children in incidents of domestic violence
  * Ensuring domestic violence survivor safety
  *   Perpetrator accountability
  *   Agency response

The updated manual also addresses the following practice issues:

  * Guidelines for assessing families experiencing domestic violence
  *   Perpetrators of domestic violence
  * Adult survivors and child witnesses
  * Complexity of children's issues and trauma-focused approach
  * Safety and wellness for CPS workers
  * Building collaborative responses for families experiencing domestic violence

The revised manual is part of the Children's Bureau Child Abuse and Neglect User Manual Series—last updated in 2003—and serves as a companion piece to Child Protective Services: A Guide for Caseworkers, a second revised manual in the series. The updated manuals from the U.S. Department of Health and Services' Children's Bureau Office on Child Abuse and Neglect are available at https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/usermanuals<https://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/389923/3684339/40837/4/>.

For a series of tip sheets on how to respond to families experiencing domestic violence and child maltreatment—including general practice recommendations, suggestions for engaging families, and guidance on documentation, assessment, decision-making, and planning—see the Child Welfare Capacity Building Center for States' Domestic Violence and the Child Welfare Professional Series at https://capacity.childwelfare.gov/states/focus-areas/child-protection/domestic-violence<https://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/389923/3684339/40839/7/>.

The MDT Approach to the
Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse Cases Involving Recantation
A Monograph

[Description: http://files.constantcontact.com/15fa05ac001/fdeb1d9b-7c34-445a-b809-fc55a75072e3.jpg]

Jerri Sites, Regional Training Specialist for SRCAC, collaborated with Eddie Chase, Senior Attorney for the Child Abuse Prosecution Project of the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA), to write a monograph titled The MDT Approach to the Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse Cases Involving Recantation. The monograph expands on Jerri’s Research-to-Practice paper<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001X0M-2FDLMAYleCuAZOfjEX4xSo_kA0EjjkwP0ARXueUGeD6nl59pukvJV1DYj5sdPuuP5ULvqRXTs8M6U-TiqlL2pUEPDvBeTRrYK9408Clzx-6KBSw0n5tB_fBcEYDEqqBeTl9-D1YGSRihzfoMdXt2vxQfWZj5wQNLueETfNVcm_UusQKkNAixxW7ItTo3HDCElFRWaNiWE-8U1f2P-Q==&c=AxA8ytGoaewZgY8-g4i1b3ZkppEHFSp69hCQ0nfrdAOdrA9lOgN4Nw==&ch=XzEt_bkug3qkz2AjnDBO9zYyl-g3VrZ75YpOXW1dG4qoB5iKKxzm3g==>, which focuses on reducing the potential for recantation, and was
published by SRCAC and the National Children’s Advocacy Center in September 2017.

The monograph shares additional research-based information related to the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases in which children recant. By including case scenarios to illustrate the system’s response to recantation and the MDT’s effort to prevent recantation from occurring, the authors paint a picture of the difficulty child abuse professionals can face, as well as the successes they can share when working together as a team.

The monograph is now available here.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001X0M-2FDLMAYleCuAZOfjEX4xSo_kA0EjjkwP0ARXueUGeD6nl59pukvJV1DYj5sdszBgToqm6SEfMUzKOzejYlrKr0UYjzRvOaJJE-yZQvN_DOXJEJIzcbt2eBsXMJ_d0SyYQ3As25UElX7hLs8D-VPaJAmGzbvXpp1SZnpE6nmmIXuLDCNGpCmYWcaHbNRC&c=AxA8ytGoaewZgY8-g4i1b3ZkppEHFSp69hCQ0nfrdAOdrA9lOgN4Nw==&ch=XzEt_bkug3qkz2AjnDBO9zYyl-g3VrZ75YpOXW1dG4qoB5iKKxzm3g==>
