2019 Conference
Join us for the 7th annual 90by30 Conference on Friday, October 25, 2019, at the Lane Community College Center for Meeting and Learning. Our theme this year is "A Connected Child is a Protected Child," and we'll be focusing on innovations in prevention and the collaborations that make those innovations possible.
We're excited to welcome Miriam Calderon, the Director of Oregon's Early Learning System, as our keynote speaker. She will describe Raise Up Oregon, our state's cross-sector strategic plan to invest in children and their families. She will outline Oregon's vision, the values that inform that vision, and will address the vital role of collaboration and local participation toward communities where all children and families are connected, nurtured, and healthy. You can read more about Ms. Calderon and her pioneering work in both the private and public sector, where she shaped birth-to-three and pre-kindergarten education in the District of Columbia and advised the Obama administration on early learning policy, here<https://oregonearlylearning.com/administration/about-us/meet-our-executive-team/>.
The Conference will feature one spotlight on the Parent Café strategy that many Lane County regions have included in their prevention plans, and another on local partnerships that are working to make a difference for children and families. Workshops will include a report on the first year of Roots of Empathy, what the data from the Oregon Child Abuse Prevention Study (OCAPS) show, and how to hold a successful Parent or Community Café. Last year's popular resource/networking fair will return to give Conference participants a chance to connect.
Look for a registration email in August!

A Visit from Mary Gordon
On Thursday, August 29, Roots of Empathy founder and president Mary Gordon will be in Eugene to help celebrate the success of rural Lane County's pilot year of her groundbreaking program to teach children empathy and compassion through interactions with an infant. Next year, classrooms in all seven regions of the county, including Eugene and Springfield, will join the ROE pilot.
You're invited to a special presentation at 10:30 a.m. by Mary Gordon on "Viewing the Classroom Climate Through the Lens of Attachment-Aware and Trauma-Informed Teaching." This is a free event but space is limited, so please RSVP here<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/roots-of-empathy-founder-mary-gordon-speaks-on-empathy-in-classrooms-tickets-67095944777> if you plan to attend. We're still working out the details of the location, and we'll update you as soon as we know more.
We feel lucky to have Roots of Empathy in Lane County - but this community-driven program only happens because of our volunteers! Classrooms in 90by30's rural and metro regions are still looking for a few more instructors<https://rootsofempathy.org/want-to-be-a-roots-of-empathy-instructor/> and families<https://rootsofempathy.org/want-to-be-a-roots-of-empathy-family/> to participate. Visit the Roots of Empathy website<http://www.rootsofempathy.org/> to learn more, or email SaraL at 90by30.com<mailto:SaraL at 90by30.com?subject=Roots%20of%20Empathy> to get involved.

Poverty, implicit bias, racism-these are just some of the preventable social factors that contribute to persistent, unjust inequities in health outcomes for children and families. Now, we're taking the next step and highlighting strategies children's health programs and organizations can take to move the needle on health equity.
NICHQ is thrilled to announce the second webinar in our Health Equity Series:

This webinar will share experiences from two health equity champions: Arthur R. James, MD, an obstetrician, gynecologist and pediatrician who has sought to improve care for underserved populations for the entirety of his medical career; and Denise Evans, MM, MA, a certified facilitator on cultural intelligence, health equity and social justice, and unconscious bias. Together, they will provide insights on:
* Successful programs that have addressed health equity
* Lessons learned about what led to those programs' successes
* Strategies that programs and organizations can use to champion health equity in their work
