Best Practice Checklist For Interviewing Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma
Thursday, June 27, 2019 | 11:00 a.m. - 12:35 p.m. (Pacific)

As attorneys, we take the worst stories our clients carry and try to mold them into cognizable claims for relief. One of our greatest assets are memories of our clients, particularly the specific details we use to show credibility. However, the effect of trauma on memory is well documented- often times the most painful moments are hardest to clearly remember. So how can we as attorneys help our clients remember the things anyone would want to forget?

In this training we'll discuss the latest research in neuropsychology and what it can tell us about how we remember. We will review concrete techniques to reduce client stress during interviews as well as how to best support them before, during, and after testimony. Finally, we'll look at what we can do to support ourselves and our colleagues in this vital and difficult work.

A trauma-informed organization is one where all practices and services are viewed through the lens of trauma. In a trauma-informed organization, programs respond empathetically to survivor needs, ensure their physical and emotional safety, develop realistic goals, and avoid re-traumatization. This training provides guidance on how your organization can become trauma-informed and how to modify policies and procedures to respond to trauma victims.

This training is designed for those responsible for designing and implementing their organization's programs and policies. It will be delivered online, over the course of 5 weeks, beginning on July 1, 2019. Each week, except for the introductory week, will include a facilitated webinar.

This training is part of the NVAA Advanced Skills Institute and, like all OVC TTAC trainings, there is no cost to participate. Please note: Space is limited. Apply today to reserve your seat.
