Remote MDT Meetings
As MDTs look for ways to continue to collaborate during the current crisis, many are considering hosting remote meetings. Can we use a video conferencing platform to hold remote multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings?
Yes, as long as the platform you choose and your team’s practices related to protecting victim information are VOCA compliant. This means that the platform and your process protect victims’ confidentiality (the same requirement that applies to in person MDT meetings). There are resources available to help you select a platform or evaluate whether the platform you use adequately protects victim information. Please follow this link for more information and tools. For information on VOCA confidentiality and personally identifying information requirements, please refer to pages 18-19 of the VOCA Grantee Handbook. Remember to also consider lower tech options for meetings, such as telephone conferences and encrypted emails.

In Loving Memory of Jim Bartko
Jim Bartko, author of Boy in the Mirror<https://90by30.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=22a9ef9893b9f05757ef9ed53&id=c89bd71e3b&e=fa6a233e8e>, died unexpectedly just two days after an Oakland, CA, press conference<https://90by30.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=22a9ef9893b9f05757ef9ed53&id=32454492e3&e=fa6a233e8e> where he introduced his book and announced a lawsuit against the Oakland Diocese. Jim was a survivor of child sexual abuse by a Catholic priest from the ages of 7 to 10. He carried the secret alone for over 40 years.

Proceeds from his book will go to a scholarship fund for UO students interested in working with trauma and trauma healing and to the 90by30 Initiative. Jim had pledged to dedicate the rest of his life to preventing child abuse and reducing the silence and stigma that still surrounds disclosure - and it's that mission we will work to carry on at 90by30.

Salem, OR – Reduced contact with educators, medical professionals, and community members can impact children and families in many ways. During this time of social distancing, the Oregon Department of Human Services encourages Oregonians to check in with families and continue to engage with child welfare when appropriate.

“Our child welfare agency is a small part of a much larger system that focuses on child safety,” said Rebecca Jones Gaston, DHS Child Welfare Director “During this very fluid situation, where there are more questions than answers, we are keeping child safety paramount in our work and want to reiterate our dedication to children and families.”

During this time, the DHS Child Welfare Program will continue to operate the 24/7 statewide Child Abuse hotline, respond to reports of abuse and neglect, and work with community partners to maintain support to families.

The COVID-19 pandemic creates many challenges for families, which could impact child safety, including:

  *   Lack of access to medical care
  *   Lack of face time with mandated reporters
  *   Limited access to regular meals due to school closures
  *   Known exposure to COVID-19 or symptomatic people
  *   In close contact with someone who is considered high risk if infected with COVID-19

DHS encourages community members to check in with at-risk families -- including young children, children and adults with developmental delays or other medical vulnerabilities, isolated children and families, and youth and families with severe emotional/mental health needs – through phone, email, or by safe distance.

“As we grapple with isolation and uncertainty, let’s connect with one other in safe ways to continue to build the connected, generous communities we all need,” said Becky Jones, Executive Director of Oregon Child Abuse Intervention Centers.

Sharing resource information for food banks, unemployment benefits, SNAP availability, and educational resources can be extremely helpful. If you suspect a child is being abused, please contact the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-(SAFE)7233.

Dear colleagues, partners, and neighbors across Oregon,

Trauma Informed Oregon (TIO) is OPEN—don’t worry, not physically open. We are absolutely following physical distancing to flatten the curve, to protect others, and to respect the great sacrifices that so many are making. We have been in touch with many groups on their thinking about Coronavirus and COVID-19 responses through a trauma-informed (TI) lens and how this is happening across sectors and regions in the state.

This is uncharted territory; however, the principles, knowledge, and practices of trauma informed care (TIC)<http://4et16.r.ah.d.sendibm4.com/mk/cl/f/7Y-Cp2YCqEdjvaSg3lpEpk7RVSfAz0aVxOlqV97FVidw_f0tXt_mhgj_wcAz_ExZC_kaubvTIGUlzvgJYLuaZjchlUDDW6H67bCkEGrvfDa7ZbMv4wn3scSgsV4U78R--Y3HhYnFdOeIO9-S7uv4fg-DvVvqJ8ARfQkyNdq8Bw6jASYQVbPdfS2c86JGQNax3wZs1wNt7dPvTSr4YH6044LMI1h-UCG-az0VSaAevUc> can help us in our efforts to reduce the impact of the acute stress, to prevent unnecessary trauma-inducing policies, to mitigate and respond to the long-term impacts of toxic stress, and to prepare for healing and repair as this evolves. We do this work by centering diversity, equity, and inclusion knowing that although we are all experiencing this, the impact and needs will be different across communities.

I am focused on how

  *   we maintain social connection as this is a significant buffer to toxic stress,
  *   we think about the immediate needs but also the long-term needs of this event,
  *   we support those for whom there is no house or their home is not safe,
  *   we can support leaders to best support staff and communities.

More than anything I am focused on how Trauma Informed Oregon can be supportive to you.
Ways We Can Support You

 Address your questions about trauma informed approaches and COVID-19 responses. Seriously, ask us any questions. How do I talk to my kids about this? How do I connect with my 80-year-old aunt in a different state? How do I monitor my staff’s coping remotely? How do I communicate to staff in a way that doesn’t overwhelm them?

  1.  Track down resources. Do you need a TIP sheet or have ideas about something specific? Let us know and we will work on it. I need a script for telling staff about the change in command. I need a tip sheet to give teachers about how and why they need to be in touch with students. I need a tip sheet on safe technology to connect youth. I need messaging in Spanish.
  2.  Highlight the TI work you are doing. Do you have something good you’d like to share? Rural strategies? School-based strategies? Peer support? If something is working, let us know and we can share with others. It is an active learning experience!

This video discusses the vital role victim advocates play on the multidisciplinary team (MDT). MDTs can use this video as a training and orientation tool for both incoming and current MDT members.
