NACC's online Red Book Training Course
Our Winter Session Has Begun!
Ready to become a CWLS? It's not too late to get certified in 2020!
[A picture containing chart, text Description automatically generated]
Winter Session: November 3 - December 15, 2020
The material covered in the course is drawn from Child Welfare Law and Practice: Representing Children, Parents, and State Agencies in Abuse, Neglect, and Dependency Cases (3rd Edition). The course is intended to assist you in breaking the material down, focusing on important concepts, and guiding you through the material in the Red Book. This course will not cover every chapter. The instructor has made intentional decisions about what information to cover in the time that is allotted for the course.
Information will be provided before each webinar session including the section of the Red Book and corresponding chapters, and sections within each chapter, that will be covered. Please note that prior to each week it will be helpful if you have read the chapters and sections that will be covered. Most weeks, the webinar will be 1 hour long. However, sessions 2 and 7 will be 1.5 hours long in order to cover the material sufficiently.

NACC is pleased to announce Betsy Fordyce, JD, CWLS, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center, will be returning to teach the winter session!
This is a great opportunity for child welfare attorneys to take their education and practice to the next level and apply for certification to become a Child Welfare Law Specialist (CWLS). One need not be a CWLS applicant in order to take the course, but we do encourage participants to become certified. The CWLS exam can be taken online at the convenience of the applicant and is remotely proctored over video. The cost for the CWLS application and exam is $375 for NACC Members ($500 for nonmembers). Click here to apply for CWLS Certification.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001NMs4INTF2Yz5txv4_trpiTzEh5t8kimp56KakJ9uk4In_CopmkdLTpRGQwzdzAPTn7vKb72PgaEJqE17YtfSpxvWW3gaKe233lmeA5UqidPAvaSIajRmHVKcdgVgIce--IgCzRJfpiop4flpcHZjmq1ZU7EM4fuwN3RHorsBKu2WnHMSNv10kw==&c=V0TOrT1PHV1mInG_awUfIBl3QjEPl6Icf1xDZ6zzAeQ_cRO3OB0drg==&ch=P5PgtgkmbRBHGhCsQ2VcAHo-2v0fEk6POVKAGAl6ji5JLup8TGh9Jw==>
The cost of the course is $200 per person for groups and NACC members ($100 for CWLS; $275 for nonmembers). All live sessions are recorded and participants will have access to the recordings for six months (participants who can’t attend certain sessions will be able view the recordings at their leisure). Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
This course is accredited for 8 hours of CLE in Colorado. CLE approval in at least one MCLE state can streamline an attorney’s CLE application in another state. Approval has been granted in two formats - for those who plan to participate live each session and for those who intend to watch the recordings. Please check with the CLE authority in your jurisdiction with regard to specific online and on-demand learning requirements or limitations. Certificates of attendance and accompanying documentation will be made available to participants after the course concludes.

Suicide Prevention Training Encourages Upstream Approaches
NWCPHP’s new online resource, the Suicide Prevention Training Series<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwcphp.org%2Ftraining%2Fsuicide-prevention-training-series&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C40e87245f2284aa7e79008d8870b9508%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637407831126388103%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=plnqr%2BzG5sieqy18L%2B18f51j9AcP1wa4PcxNpsTHoPc%3D&reserved=0>, introduces learners to upstream prevention efforts from around the region, with an emphasis on community engagement and data-informed decision making.
Through videos and comics, learners follow the story of a small, rural public health department struggling with how to address a recent increase in suicides in their community. Pulling from work by public health leaders in Idaho and Washington, at the stateand local levels, the series humanizes the struggles of losing a community member to suicide and provides context to the interrelated challenges of developing prevention efforts.
“We were inspired by some of our favorite graphic novels and comics, which are exciting tools for adult education as well as for communicating health information to diverse audiences. Using this storytelling format helped us convey grief and other emotionsthat accompany the death of a loved one and use characters who can grow and learn, like real public health leaders,” said NWCPHP instructional designer Kevin deVoss.
The no-cost, self-paced series can be accessed by creating an account in PH LearnLink. Visit the Suicide Prevention Training Series<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwcphp.org%2Ftraining%2Fsuicide-prevention-training-series&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C40e87245f2284aa7e79008d8870b9508%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637407831126398104%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2FmRdWxo0MVs5ybUuKGYU%2B46cxxsVTeFurzcCpMArBmI%3D&reserved=0> to learn more. Operated by the Office for Victims of Crime, the Center seeks to strengthen human trafficking victim services in the United States by delivering free coaching, mentoring, and a resource library for organizations and federally recognized tribes looking to start, sustain, or grow their anti-trafficking work. The Center offers help in a number of areas, including financial management, community partnerships, delivery of victim services, and more. American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) have the highest crime victimization rates in the nation but often have difficulty connecting with the services that exist to help them recover from crime and abuse. The National Congress of American Indians<https://victimsofcrime.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db5de61499b6cf77db23bb1ca&id=1db9b5b5f0&e=5da4b172af>, the Tribal Law and Policy Institute<https://victimsofcrime.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db5de61499b6cf77db23bb1ca&id=082a0ec7bb&e=5da4b172af>, and the National Center for Victims of Crime<https://victimsofcrime.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=db5de61499b6cf77db23bb1ca&id=579a6d6b0e&e=5da4b172af>, with the input and guidance of tribal stakeholders across the country, have created a web-based resource mapping that provides a listing of all services available for AI/AN survivors; and identifies gaps in services so those can be addressed. The Tribal Resource Tool includes services for all ages of AI/AN survivors and victims; all forms of victimization; all locations (on or off reservations, in areas that are remote, rural, urban, or suburban); and all needs of victims, including justice, safety, healing, and support.
