Suicide Prevention Training Encourages Upstream Approaches
NWCPHP's new online resource, the Suicide Prevention Training Series<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwcphp.org%2Ftraining%2Fsuicide-prevention-training-series&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C40e87245f2284aa7e79008d8870b9508%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637407831126388103%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=plnqr%2BzG5sieqy18L%2B18f51j9AcP1wa4PcxNpsTHoPc%3D&reserved=0>, introduces learners to upstream prevention efforts from around the region, with an emphasis on community engagement and data-informed decision making.
Through videos and comics, learners follow the story of a small, rural public health department struggling with how to address a recent increase in suicides in their community. Pulling from work by public health leaders in Idaho and Washington, at the stateand local levels, the series humanizes the struggles of losing a community member to suicide and provides context to the interrelated challenges of developing prevention efforts.
"We were inspired by some of our favorite graphic novels and comics, which are exciting tools for adult education as well as for communicating health information to diverse audiences. Using this storytelling format helped us convey grief and other emotionsthat accompany the death of a loved one and use characters who can grow and learn, like real public health leaders," said NWCPHP instructional designer Kevin deVoss.
The no-cost, self-paced series can be accessed by creating an account in PH LearnLink. Visit the Suicide Prevention Training Series<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwcphp.org%2Ftraining%2Fsuicide-prevention-training-series&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C40e87245f2284aa7e79008d8870b9508%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637407831126398104%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2FmRdWxo0MVs5ybUuKGYU%2B46cxxsVTeFurzcCpMArBmI%3D&reserved=0> to learn more.
