Vital Subjects: The Intersections of Animal Abuse, Interpersonal Violence, and Child Abuse

Please join us on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 2:00–3:30 p.m. eastern time, for the Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center webinar "The Intersections of Animal Abuse, Interpersonal Violence, and Child Abuse,” hosted by Maggie Harris and Marlene Richter.

 This Vital Subjects webinar is designed to educate participants about the unique challenges faced by victims who have pets; the correlation between animal abuse, interpersonal violence, and child abuse; and the importance of providing safe havens for both humans and their pets. The webinar will highlight the critical role that pet shelters, such as Noah's Animal House (a 2019 CNN Top Ten Hero), play in supporting survivors of interpersonal violence. This training is ideal for professionals working in domestic violence shelters, animal welfare organizations, child advocacy centers, social services, and law enforcement.

"The Intersections of Animal Abuse, Interpersonal Violence, and Child Abuse” webinar is part of the Vital Subjects series. This series will address topics that are critical to the victim services field across the country.

National Children’s Alliance (NCA) is soliciting abstracts for in-person, virtual, and live virtual presentations at our 2026 Leadership Conference, June 29-July 1, 2026. The NCA Leadership Conference is a hybrid event with options for attendees and presenters to join in person in Washington, D.C., or online. This year, we're adding new session tracks for Mental Health and Workforce Development, so there are even more opportunities to share your expertise in developing programs and delivering outcomes. Calling all virtual presenters! No need to travel
We love our in-person conference crowd, but travel and hotels can be expensive and time-consuming for presenters and learners. That's why we've invested in making our virtual conference a real experience for our hundreds of virtual attendees where their learning needs come first.

While all in-person workshops are pre-recorded for virtual attendees and all registrants to enjoy for three months after the conference, we aim to have at least one live, virtual-only session per breakout period. Children with neuro-divergent disorders such as ASD are at an increased risk of child maltreatment. This population presents challenges for forensic interviewers as there is great variability in functioning including unique memory and cognitive processes, linguistic style, understanding and expression of emotions, and forming connections with others. Many of these children can provide information about their experiences if the interviewer is able to adapt questioning approaches and the interview strategies to meet the needs of this child.
