Ocean Recreational Salmon Season to Close after Labor Day

PORTLAND - Salmon fishery managers decided today to close the ocean =
recreational salmon season off the mouth of the Columbia River after Labor =
Day. The closure affects the area from Cape Falcon, Oregon, to Leadbetter =
Point, Washington, and is effective September 3. =20

The ocean salmon season off the mouth of the Columbia River was scheduled =
to continue through September 30 or until anglers harvested 55,700 coho. =
Fishery managers project that the coho quota will be met after the Labor =
Day weekend. State fishery biologists will tally the salmon catch next =
week and determine if there are coho left on the quota to consider =
re-opening the ocean salmon fishery sometime after Labor Day

This closure does not affect the popular Buoy 10 salmon fishery inside the =
Columbia River. Anglers are reminded that the bag limit for the Buoy 10 =
salmon fishery is two salmon, of which no more than one may be a chinook. =
All retained coho and steelhead must have a healed adipose fin clip. =20

Other ocean salmon fishing opportunities include:

Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain: The chinook season is open through October =
31. Retention of coho is prohibited.

Humbug Mountain to the Oregon/California border: The chinook season is =
open through September 15. Retention of coho is prohibited.

Additional information on bag limits, gear restrictions, and near-shore =
terminal area ocean salmon fisheries can be found in the 2002 Oregon Ocean =
Salmon and Halibut Sport Fishing Regulations.
