The National Marine Fisheries Service, Pacific Fishery Management Council, =
states of Washington and Oregon, and ocean troll salmon fishers discussed =
by conference call the status of the ocean commercial troll chinook =
fishery off northern Oregon (north of Cape Falcon) and off Washington that =
was most recently open from August 22 through 28. The following action =
was taken:

ACTION TAKEN: Season is now closed for the remainder of 2002, and will =
not reopen.
=20
RATIONALE: During the most recent opening from August 22 through 28, an =
estimated 4,417 chinook were landed and leave approximately 450 chinook on =
the quota. Tracking of landings by ODFW and WDFW have continued to have =
problems throughout the season, and there is a strong likelihood that the =
entire chinook quota has already been caught. =20

Fishery managers from both states will continue to evaluate the total =
landings to determine any remainder from the fishery. Troll representative=
s were in agreement to allow the transfer of any remainder from the =
commercial quota to the recreational fishery, and that may result in a =
reopening of the sport ocean coho season off the Columbia River. There is =
a conference call scheduled for 1:00 PM Wednesday September 3 to determine =
what if anything remains on the troll quota, and consider options for the =
recreational fishery at that time.
