Fishing Quota Management Seminar to Be Held March 25

NEWPORT - A free day-long seminar on the advantages and disadvantages of fishery quota management will be held Tuesday, March 25, for fishermen, community leaders and agency personnel interested in learning more about this method of managing fisheries. The seminar is jointly sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon State University Sea Grant Extension.

The use of fishing quota management has gained interest in coastal communities recently with the adoption of new regulations, economic realities and the implementation of the federal buy-back program. Many people have asked for a better understanding of the benefits and risks of quota management. Quotas can involve set harvest levels for communities, individual boats or an entire season that targets a particular species. The seminar is designed to provide more information on the concept of quota management.

Three experts will speak on quota management options. They include Bob Alverson, Fish Vessel Owners Association of Seattle, who will talk about individual fishing quotas (IFQs) used for halibut and black cod in the North Pacific; Wally Pereyra, Profish International of Seattle, who will discuss the American Fisheries Act-driven quota management approaches; and Gary Painter of Newport, who will speak on community quotas and the Alaska crab rationalization process.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion will occur with local fishermen, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Oregon Sea Grant Extension.

The seminar is scheduled for 10 a.m. - 3: 15 p.m. in the Hatfield Marine Sciences Visitor Center Auditorium in Newport. A lunch break will occur at 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Persons interested in learning more about this educational opportunity may call Patty Burke, ODFW Marine Resources Program Manager, in Newport at (541) 867-4741.
