Season offers motorized boating on portions of John Day River
JOHN DAY.-.Motorized boats are permitted on the John Day Wild and
Scenic River upstream of Clarno Bridge and downstream of Cottonwood
Bridge from Oct. 2, 2004, through Apr. 30, 2005. Boaters should be aware
that the section of river between Clarno Bridge and Cottonwood Bridge is
closed year-round to motorized boating.
Each year, from May 1 through Oct. 1, the John Day River is open to
gasoline-powered motor boats upstream of Service Creek. Only electric
motors of 40 lbs. thrust or less are permitted from Service Creek
downstream to Clarno. The remainder of the river from Clarno downstream
to Tumwater Falls is closed to all motorized boats from May 1 through
Oct. 1.
Personal watercraft (jet skis) are permitted on the John Day River
downstream of Tumwater Falls. Motorized boating on the John Day River is
addressed in the 2001 Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) John Day River
Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement.
The Prineville District of the BLM manages the John Day River in
partnership with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Parks
and Recreation Department, The Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs
Reservation, and John Day Coalition of Counties.
