Trout stocked at Millicoma Interpretive Center pond for youth angling
ROSEBURG - Kids interested in fishing for trout can head to the
Millicoma Interpretive Center's pond to try landing a legal-sized
rainbow trout. Loaner fishing equipment and bait is provided.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is stocking the pond this
week with 600 rainbow trout. A similar number will be stocked in late
May as part of the Youth Angling Enhancement Program. Funding for the
fish is provided by the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation and the
Oregon Legislature.
"The great thing about the Millicoma Interpretive Center is that the
kids can fish and learn about the salmon life cycle," said Mike Gray,
Charleston District Fish Biologist. "The center is a fabulous, hands-on
approach to learning and volunteers are on-site to assist children who
visit the facility."
Millicoma Interpretive Center is open every day during daylight hours
and is located about 25 miles northeast of Coos Bay on the West Fork
Millicoma River. Schools and groups can schedule tours by contacting Tom
Rumreich at the ODFW Charleston office, 541/888-5515.
Fish stocking at the center contributes to the Oregon Plan for Salmon
and Watersheds through public outreach and responsibly managing trout to
reduce mortality on juvenile salmon and steelhead in streams.
