ODFW stocks trout for Family Fun Day at Upper Empire Lake

ROSEBURG - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced an
April 30 youth fishing event at Upper Empire Lake in Coos Bay.

ODFW will stock 1,400 legal-sized rainbow trout for the Family Fun Day,
which is sponsored in part by volunteers from the Coos Bay area's
Children's Advocacy Center as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in
April. The event, which begins at 9 a.m., is being held to increase
awareness and prevention of child abuse. The day includes games, a fun
run, clowns, prizes, food and fishing.

"We're happy to be part of a great cause," said Charleston District Fish
Biologist Mike Gray, referring to ODFW's participation in the event.
"We're stocking trout late this week to increase the catch rate for
participating kids. After the event, the trout will be available in the
lake for both kids and the general public to catch."

ODFW staff and volunteers will be on hand Saturday to help kids bait
hooks and learn to fish. Loaner fishing equipment and bait are available
from the agency, and all participating kids will receive a fishing goody
bag.

The trout purchase was jointly funded by the Oregon Wildlife Heritage
Foundation and ODFW's Youth Angling Enhancement Program. The event also
contributes to the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds by teaching
participants to fish in a manner that reduces mortality on native
juvenile salmon and steelhead smolts in streams.
