ODFW grant to Rosboro Lumber Company keeps 5,600 acres of private
timberlands open to hunter access
SALEM - A recent $16,240 grant from the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife's Access and Habitat Program to Rosboro Lumber Company is part
of an agreement to keep public hunting access available on 5,600 acres
of timberlands during weekends of buck deer and bull elk seasons for the
next five years.
The property, located in Kings Valley in Benton County, was purchased by
the Springfield-based company in 1993. Rosboro Lumber Company replanted
the area with more than 1.5 million trees.
Rosboro officials said the company wants to continue allowing public
access for hunting on the property, while still managing the road system
to prevent stream sedimentation and minimize the risk of wildfire. The
A&H Program grant funds personnel to open and close gates as well as
educating hunters and monitoring hunter activity and success rates.
The Access and Habitat Program is funded by a $2 surcharge on hunting
licenses. Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to
individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations and
others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access
projects throughout the state.
