Wildlife conservation strategy approved
SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today approved a plan to
provide Oregon a non-regulatory approach to conserving species in need
of help.
The Oregon Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy examines the
state's many diverse ecosystems, and offers tools to help all landowners
voluntarily manage property in ways that benefit fish, wildlife and
plant species.
"From private landowners with small parcels to timber corporations
managing thousands of acres, the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation
Strategy offers ways to manage lands to benefit Oregon species," said
ODFW Wildlife Division Administrator Ron Anglin. "Perhaps most
importantly, the Strategy identifies species in need of conservation -
plants and animals that are not threatened or endangered at present, but
could be in the near future without some help."
The Strategy was prepared as a condition of receiving federal State
Wildlife Grant funds. All 50 states are working to develop similar
conservation strategies. The Commission's approval means Oregon's
strategy will be presented to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by Oct.
1.
