Commission tables archery proposal

TILLAMOOK - ODFW wildlife managers today presented to the state Fish and
Wildlife Commission information on a proposal that would require hunters
to choose between firearm and archery hunting each year.

"Choose your weapon" was proposed by members of the ODFW Archery Review
Committee, an advisory panel of hunters formed by ODFW to examine ways
to improve archery hunting in the state.

The Committee identified hunter crowding and big game population
management as leading issues facing archery hunters, and noted that
hunters who are unsuccessful in drawing rifle tags for controlled hunts
often purchase archery permits as a backup plan.

Department staff completed a review of the "choose your weapon"
proposal, and concluded that forcing hunters to choose between archery
and firearm hunting each spring will reduce hunting opportunities and
would hurt hunter recruitment throughout the state.

"In popular hunting areas, crowding is a historic problem," said ODFW
Wildlife Division Administrator Ron Anglin. "'Choose your weapon' rules
would not ease crowding."

The Commission asked staff to further review the proposal's potential
impacts to hunting and game management and opted against making a
decision on whether to consider it for the 2006 hunting season.
