Sturgeon retention closes April 8 from Dalles to John Day
SALEM - Anglers are reminded that sturgeon retention closes Saturday on
the Columbia River, from the Dalles Dam to the John Day Dam. The
retention closure remains in effect through the end of the year.
This stretch of the river is managed as a quota fishery, and the quota
has nearly been reached. Sturgeon retention in the Dalles pool and
tributaries also is prohibited starting Saturday.
Catch-and-release angling for sturgeon in this stretch of the Columbia
is allowed until May 1, when all sturgeon angling closes on the mainstem
Columbia River from the west end of the grain silo located near Rufus
upstream to John Day Dam, to protect oversize spawning sturgeon.
Catch-and-release sturgeon angling re-opens July 31.
Anglers are encouraged to consult the 2006 Oregon Sport Fishing
Regulations book for details, and call ODFW's angling hotline at
503-947-6001 for recorded, up-to-date information on fishery changes.
