Summer chinook salmon angling opens on Columbia River
SALEM - State fishery managers today reminded anglers that summer
chinook angling opens June 16 on the mainstem Columbia River, from
Tongue Point near Astoria to the Priest Rapids Dam, upstream of the
Washington - Oregon border.
Anglers are allowed to harvest two adult chinook or steelhead per day
during this season, which extends to July 31. Only adipose fin-clipped
steelhead may be kept, but both fin-clipped and non fin-clipped chinook
may be retained.
All other permanent regulations are in effect, and anglers are
encouraged to consult the 2006 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for
details.
ODFW Fisheries Manager John North said this fishery targets upper
Columbia summer chinook, which are a mix of hatchery and healthy wild
stocks not listed by the federal Endangered Species Act. Fishery
managers predicted this year's summer chinook run at 49,000 salmon.
"Water conditions on the Columbia have been high and turbid, but should
improve steadily and anglers can anticipate better salmon and steelhead
fishing in the weeks ahead," North said.
