Trout stocked for youth fishing event

Eugene - Young people interested in angling can find a great fishing
opportunity March 11 at Cottage Grove Ponds in Cottage Grove.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is stocking 1,000 rainbow
trout into Garden Lake as part of the Youth Angling Enhancement Program,
now in its third year. ODFW staff and volunteers will be available from
9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide access to fishing equipment and angling
instruction. Contact the Springfield ODFW office at 541-726-3515 for
more information.

The stocking program is made possible through a $50,000 appropriation
from the Oregon Legislature and a partnership with the Oregon Wildlife
Heritage Foundation, which has pledged an additional $50,000 and is
working with ODFW to develop and promote youth fishing opportunities
throughout the state.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the fun of
fishing and encourage participation in outdoor recreation activities,"
said Rhine Messmer, Conservation Biology Section Manager. "A lot of
credit goes to the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation for all their
hard work and financial contributions to help make this event possible."

Under Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, anglers under the age of 13 can
fish for free. A juvenile license is required for anglers 14-17 years of
age. All other anglers must have an Oregon adult fishing license. All
fishing regulations continue to apply at this event.

"This event is for kids, so while the standard fishing regulations will
apply, we ask adults to leave the fishing to the young ones for a few
days," said Erik Moberly, ODFW biologist.

Cottage Grove Ponds are located in off Row River Road east of Cottage
Grove. From I-5, take the Cottage Grove exit (Exit 174). Head east on
Row River Road. Turn north into the Cottage Grove Ponds parking area
before crossing the Coast Fork Willamette River.
