Hello Katie,
I suspect you were actually meaning to ask Chuck Arnold these questions, but
can provide the answers as it relates to Lake Oswego's program . We hang
roughly 250 baskets every year, and our watering contract runs around $53k a
year.sounds like our watering truck set-up and schedule is very similar to
Downtown Bend's.
Roughly half of our budget is covered through individual flower basket
sponsors (about 50/50 businesses and individual residents), and the other
half comes from the City through a combination of redevelopment district
funds and revenue from our hotel/motel/transient tax.
Good luck with your program - I have to say it's one of the most visible,
successful and beloved beautification projects we've initiated over the
years.

Hi Chuck-
Thanks for getting back to me. Could you tell me how many baskets you have
and how much your watering contractor costs?

Hey Katie,
We have had a great program in Bend for several years. Our climate is dry
like yours so the challenges are pretty similar.
We grow our baskets in a local greenhouse starting in February so they are
hardy when the get put up Memorial Day weekend. We take them down Halloween
weekend. The baskets are always multi-colored petunias because that is what
really thrives here. We hire a contractor with a 600 tank water trunk to
water them every morn' in the summer months and three times a week in the
other months.
Our City provides storage of our empty baskets in the winter, but that's it.
We fund the flowers and their care thru' our Economic Improvement District
and some donations from the community. No tax dollars support the program
which is over $25K of our budget each year.
Give me a call if you'd like more details.
Cheers,
Chuck Arnold

Hi Katie,
We are very lucky in Sherwood as the City had decided to cover the flower
baskets once upon a time. When they did some updates that included our lamp
posts they actually added a drip system through the lamp posts that the
flower baskets hang from so they are automatically watered.
If your community is considering any other upgrades like that it might be a
good idea to try and combine the two.

Hello all-
I'm the Design Committee Chair for La Grande. We have a fledgling summer
flower basket program, but have come across some snags, so I'm looking for
input and advice. If your community has found successful ways to procure
flowers and keep them watered and healthy, I'd love to hear from you. We
have some special challenges here in that we have very few nurseries in the
area and HOT/DRY conditions during late summer.
Thanks-
