It's not too late to make a request for businesses or individuals to support
downtown efforts, especially if it will help fill a year-end shortfall or
support upcoming projects. Planning in advance is best, but with social
media, a campaign could be initiated before 2015 is rung in. In this week's
feature article, Senior Program Officer and Director of Coordinating Program
Services Kathy LaPlante outlines the fundraising campaigns of two Main
Street communities in Maine and highlights best practices and tips that
every Main Street can take away from their efforts.

Holiday Insurance Tip

 holiday-insurance-tip.png
<http://my.preservationnation.org/images/content/pagebuilder/holiday-insuran
ce-tip.png> It's that time of year for many Main Street organizations to
host holiday parties and it's important to have the proper liability
coverage if alcohol is being served. The best way your organization can
reduce the liability exposure is to have Liquor Liability coverage. Another
option would be to have a local restaurant or bar provide the alcohol and
servers, since they are required by law to carry the insurance. If you are
using volunteers, only have those with experience in serving alcohol, or
who've attended an alcohol service training class, be the servers for the
event. Having the right coverage will keep your mind at ease and in the
festive spirit! For more tips like this or more information about
insurance, contact National Trust Insurance Services, 866-269-0944 or visit

Celebrating Main Street Leaders

 JoanWessell.png
<http://my.preservationnation.org/images/content/pagebuilder/JoanWessell.png
> Meet Joan Wessell - the Executive Director of Downtown Corvallis
Association in Oregon. Joan became involved in downtown revitalization in
1984 shortly after moving from Corvallis to Coos Bay, Oregon. She served as
Coos Bay Downtown Director from 1984-1987 when she went back to school. Four
years after completing her masters' degree, Joan applied for the Downtown
Corvallis Association leadership role and was hired on the spot. Joan will
celebrate her 22nd anniversary as executive director of the Downtown
Corvallis Association this year. Her community recently celebrated "Joan
Wessell Day" in recognition of her many accomplishments to make Corvallis a
more livable community.

 <http://my.preservationnation.org/site/R?i=W6klf6qGq-nh1w05fBOomA> A report
from the the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and American
Express revealed that 88 million consumers "shopped small" on November 29,
up 14.9 percent from just a year ago. Additionally, a reported $14.3 billion
was spent with independent retailers and restaurants on the day - an
increase of 2.1 percent from $14 billion in 2013. Thanks to everyone for
supporting indie retailers on Main Street!
