Hi Sheri,
 
It’s short notice but I wanted to let you know about an exciting
development in downtown Independence.  The JS Cooper Building – one of
the poster children for absentee landlord/vacant distressed historic
buildings – has been sold.  The new owners are holding a “revival” aka:
open house, to talk about their plans for the building and let people
wander around inside.  This is one of the key buildings downtown and has
attracted a lot of interest as it’s been closed for the better part of
20 years.  If you or anyone you know wants to come out for the event, it
will be Tuesday (tomorrow) at 11 am.  The new owner and his property
manager are historic preservation buffs and intend to restore as many of
the building’s original features as they can.  It will be a lot of fun
and it’s a great building to look at.  I’ve attached a current and
historic picture. 
 
Could you pass this on to the OMS listserv and any other appropriate
email list?  The sale of this building might make for an interesting
case study at the next OMS conference too – a combination of pressure
from the city, persistence from the buyer, and some luck thrown in.
