Hi Shauna –
This summer will be the third year we are partnering with the city’s park ranger program, however, there is a cost for us. The park ranger program is run in cooperation with Parks & Rec and the McMinnville Police Department. The department trains the rangers to cite for minor offenses, carry radios and monitor behaviors in two of the city’s parks. Since City Park adjoins our historic district, the MDA has paid for the extension of the program in our own 36-block district. Patrols begin in late April or early May and run through the first week in October. They have really helped us, not only in keeping people moving downtown, but as tourism ambassadors.
Our cost the first year was $10,000, which we had to take out of our reserves. Last summer, we could only afford $6,000 and our hope is that the city will step in to pay for them 100 percent in the future. They have made a difference for regular police officers as well so the city really sees the benefit.
That might be an option for you.
Cheers,
Cassie

Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] Neighborhood Watch Programs
Hello all,
I am looking into starting a Neighborhood Watch/ Block Captain Program in my historic downtown area. We have had a lot of shenanigans downtown lately. With the nice weather coming, I fear they are just getting started. Does anyone have experience in starting a program like this? Any advice on what works for you and what doesn't?
Thanks!!!
Shauna
