We experimented with solar a few years back in Klamath Falls and had the same experience. They just don’t get bright enough and didn't last even a few hours. Also, as the tree canopy changes, the necessary exposure became unreliable.

When we used them for lighting up trees, the cords were often cut/vandalized, and folks figured out that they could plug in their cell phones, electric blankets, etc. into the plugs under the grates in the tree wells. It actually created more of a problem, so we redid things so that we could pull power from the tops of buildings and light posts for lighting up trees in Downtown.

>>> Our twinkle lights stay up year-round and then we agument them with additional lights during the holidays. Everyone loves our twinkle lights and we get comments on them all of the time. We have custom male and female ends that are attached to SPT2 Outdoor/UV rated wire (500 ft. spools). We run the wires to specific spots on the trees where we attach C7 sockets onto the wire. We use C7 warm white acrylic random twinkle bulbs (last forever for the most part and easy to replace). Everything has been purchased between Christmas Central and 100bulbs.com <http://100bulbs.com/>.
