Oregon Main Street worked with Washington State Main Street and a nonprofit consultant to develop a series of companion guides to introduce the Main Street Approach(tm) and nonprofit governance to people interested in downtown revitalization especially board members, volunteers, and staff. The idea was to take our very long handbooks and break out the information into more manageable pieces for you to use for training different audiences.

The guides can be found on our website at www.oregonmainstreet.org<http://www.oregonmainstreet.org>. Click on the orange Portal button to go to our resource page for our Network communities. The guides can be found under the Overview/Handbook tab. We also have sample documents on this site as well.

While each guide is a stand-alone piece, they are designed to work together. Our next step will be to produce short videos that can be used at the local level for training purposes in concert with the guides.

The Companion Guides include:

  1. About Main Street is written for anyone wanting to know more about the Main Street Approach(tm) and how Main Street organizations serve their communities. It explores why downtown matters, what a Main Street organization is and who benefits from it, and how to be a successful Main Street organization.
  2. Starting a Main Street is written for people new to Main Street and considering starting a Main Street organization in their own community. It explores why your community might use the Main Street Approach(tm), how to tap into state and national resources, start a Main Street organization, and become a nonprofit.
  3. Board Leadership is written for Main Street organization board members and the staff with whom they work. It explores the basics of board governance, financial management, nonprofit law, and each section reviews what board members need to know as well as tools to help strengthen board leadership.
  4. Executive Leadership is written for Main Street executive leaders and staff. It is also a resource for board members to understand a nonprofit executive director's role and their relationship to boards.

Big thank you to Katie for customizing the design of the guides with photos and images from our Network communities!

Please take a moment to look at the guides and provide feedback to us.

Best, Sheri
