You always have to weight the consequences of cost to biz owners and dollars, but I have to agree with Liz.
Take every opportunity you can during this major upheaval because it won’t come along again for another half century. We have power in our light poles and it makes so much possible.

Just going to get up on my soap box for a minute - I wasn't around when they did the streetscape renovation in 2012, but I desperately wish they had run electrical underground and to the treewells. It would make events and projects so much easier to manage if there was consistent power. We also have tree lights year round which cost $15-20k annually to maintain and it's a project that honestly probably shouldn't have happened without that power. Now we spend thousand a year and have no reliable power, gfi switch problems, wires hanging off roofs, etc. It's a major regret that the City didn't spend the money to do it at the time when they ripped up the streets. If you have the money and opportunity and political willpower to do it, I highly recommend it. It would save us thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours. EVERY YEAR... ok, off my soap box now.

We are in the middle of the streetscape right now. Instead of undergrounding power, we are rerouting it to be off street and on the side streets instead. It saved $500K and would less disruptive to businesses. To underground power, the businesses may have had to upgrade their electrical panels which would be a few thousand dollars in cost and have downtime to their business. I’m happy to answer any questions you have as well.

Good afternoon everyone,
Our Main Street organization is interested in creating a historic district in town, but it will be a pretty big undertaking that might include laying underground wires instead of using the power poles. Our board wanted me to see if anyone has undertaken a project of this size, and what steps you took to move forward on it.
Thank you in advance,
Lyndsey Dixon
