[OMS_MANAGERS] Design/Review Committee

Hi Darin:

  1. Construction Design and Art Projects – does the same body review all of these, or are they managed separately?
     * Depending on where and what – our Historic Landmarks Commission and/or Design Review Committee would be involved.
  2. If your district is in a historic district, and/or your local government is a CLG, does this committee overlap with those processes?
     * Yes. We have a Historic Landmarks Commission to review construction and art within and adjacent to historic properties/districts. The City received CLG funds that are often used in matching grants through the City benefiting private property owners.
  3. How integrated is your Main Street organization in the design review process?
     * Not hardly. The HLC is made up of volunteer members, I believe a number of seats are designated for certain industries/backgrounds and one or two are at large. If we saw a permit going through that was not compatible, we would attending the public hearing and testify on the matter.

We highly recommend asking your City to engage an HLC – ours has varied in activity over the years, but there are many projects they could take on that we would be happy to partner on. One that is still taking place are historic preservation awards for dedicated individuals that are nominated in May, historic preservation month.

Good luck,
SL

Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] Design/Review Committee

Good afternoon, everyone! Our City is looking at creating a design review committee to review art, construction projects, renovations, etc., particularly in Downtown (think overall design, not one of the Main Street four points design). The City has a pretty solid design review program, but it is handled by City staff and they want to expand to include murals and other art projects, historic preservation concerns, etc.

I’d love to hear your thoughts or how your community does it. Here are some questions to prompt some thinking:

  1. Construction Design and Art Projects – does the same body review all of these, or are they managed separately?
  2. If your district is in a historic district, and/or your local government is a CLG, does this committee overlap with those processes?
  3. How integrated is your Main Street organization in the design review process?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!
