[OMS_MANAGERS] Tents in Parking Spaces

T seems to me, that rather than investing in tents, heaters, splash guards, signage, platforms, reduced parking options and servers crossing the streets in the rain. We should be lobbying the governors office to allow customers back into the brick and mortar restaurants that are already costing our restauranteurs to keep open. It seems like helping them get inside by adding air filtration systems would be more cost effective and safer for all involved. See attached. We’re looking at options in Albany. We had a stand up meeting on the sidewalk on Friday for restaurants in the 200 block of 1st Ave. All 6 restaurants in that block were represented with 12 folks including one building owner and one retail shop owner that came by with a customer carry out then joined in. It was a fantastic and supportive discussion.

Currently, Albany has lots of new sidewalk dining, but the high crown of the road and narrow space in parallel parking hasn’t been conducive to using the street. We may close a traffic lane and remove some parking. We’re also looking at options for tents and water barriers to deal with splashing.

There was an idea brought up to put up a big tent in a parking lot and create restaurant specific areas. The logistics of serving at a distance and crossing the street with all the food makes it a longer discussion than streets, platforms and pop ups. Wed also have to work it out with OLCC.

Has anyone checked COVID regs on serving inside tents?

Hi Kevin,

I have referred to these as parklets I believe. City of Hood River, City of the Dalles, and I think Pendleton have done some recent work with them.

Hey everyone,

Our City is trying to figure out the best way to permit tents or covers in the seating areas that now occupy on-street parking spaces. Has anyone else's government come up with a great solution they'd like to share?

We are looking at how these outdoor seating areas can be successful even after the rainy season begins, and tents with heaters seem to be the most likely desired solution. But... there are a lot of permitting challenges with that.

I know our City staff would love to chat with anyone who has ideas for us to explore in Beaverton.
