That's us.  The Independence Downtown Association (501c3) is the Main Street organization and the City supports it in various ways.  I was on the board for a long time - just came off in January - and tried to help out and funnel opportunities IDA's way.  We created a downtown manager position a couple years ago tasked with promotions, events, fostering business collaborations, etc., as well as time dedicated to building IDA's capacity and programs.  It has worked well, although drawing the line between "IDA business" and "city business" has been hard since the projects can be very similar.  Even though we share the same goals, there are always questions about who is actually driving the bus, whether enough time (or too much) is being dedicated to particular tasks, etc.  It also created some confusion about whether events or programs were IDA or City activities.  I probably sound negative about it, but it's clearly a net positive.  IDA still hopes to eventually hire their own staff person, and we hope to help them achieve that goal. I'd love to hear from those of you who work, in some capacity, for the City you're in.  Looking for models where a City Economic Development person or Tourism person is doing the Main Street Work.  Or maybe sharing City work/Main Street non profit work?
