[OMS_MANAGERS] CARES Dollars for businesses

Hi Shannen,

While it wasn’t a project through the Independence Downtown Association, the non-profit arm of Indy Commons worked with the Cities of Independence and Monmouth to create a technical assistance program using CARES Act funding.  The program worked one-on-one with business owners to help them implement a free technical assistance project addressing an immediate need due to the impacts of COVID-19.  Because of the urgent need for assistance, as well as the short turnaround timeline of this grant program, we developed a list of clearly-defined business support services applicants could choose from that could be implemented quickly and provide tangible, beneficial outcomes.  Businesses were able to select Print Design, Brand Identity, Digital Media Strategy, Website, Photography, Content Development, and CRM; they were then matched with a local consultant who performed the work. I am the chair of the Economic Development committee for the city of West Linn(as well as a board member of our local main street).  With the CARES Act extended, we are having an emergency meeting of the EDC to figure out how we can best spend the money to directly assist local businesses.  Our city was slow to act last year, telling us CARES dollars couldn’t be spent on anything for businesses, only for the city itself. After our main street director worked hard to correct them on this, we want to figure out more ways to use them. We initially bought tents and heaters for our restaurants.  Looking to help more than just the restaurants.  The city is more likely to go forward with our recommendations if we have specific examples of what other cities have done.  So I’m just looking for what other cities have done to help convince our city that money can be used that way.
