Shannen,

We worked with our city to facilitate a Reimagine Grant fund. It was an opportunity for businesses to reimagine their businesses for a covid life. We funded a delivery truck for our tap house, a CRM system for the bakery, a few parklets, a studio setup for the bookstore to run facebook lives, etc. It was really great because the businesses could tell us what they needed most instead of us picking one project.

Here's more about it: https://www.orcity.org/economicdevelopment/reimagine-opportunity-fund

Hey Shannen,

The City of Independence created a Small Business Scratch-it promotion during the holidays that utilized CARES Act funds that was really successful. We worked with a company to create a custom scratch-it, each scratch-it was a winner with prizes worth $5, $10 or $25 that customers received when they made a purchase and could then be put towards their next purchase at any participating business. We had a mix of retail and restaurant businesses participate with each business getting 75-250 scratch-its to hand out to their customers. This worked well to get people back into the businesses to make another purchase, and was great because our community was happy to get essentially free money to spend locally. At the end of the promotion, I worked with each business to reimburse them for the total amount of scratch-its they redeemed, so it was a win-win-win for our community.

It worked so well that we are creating a Love Local campaign for the month of February, which will include another scratch-it promotion, twice as many participating businesses and will be focused on our local restaurants and bars. I included some photos for you and am happy to talk more about the specifics of the promotions if you need them.

Warmly,

Courtney

I am the chair of the Economic Development committee for the city of West Linn(as well as a board member of our local main street). With the CARES Act extended, we are having an emergency meeting of the EDC to figure out how we can best spend the money to directly assist local businesses. Our city was slow to act last year, telling us CARES dollars couldn’t be spent on anything for businesses, only for the city itself. After our main street director worked hard to correct them on this, we want to figure out more ways to use them. We initially bought tents and heaters for our restaurants. Looking to help more than just the restaurants. The city is more likely to go forward with our recommendations if we have specific examples of what other cities have done. So I’m just looking for what other cities have done to help convince our city that money can be used that way.

Thanks!

Shannen
