Happy Spring! With the flowers starting to bloom and the days feeling longer, I always feel a little burst of energy at this time of the year. Thank you all for the work you are doing to create welcoming, inviting, and vibrant communities. 😊

It has the total 2023 and cumulative stats, program highlights, and more! Feel free to share with your board members and volunteers as a reminder that your efforts are part of something bigger. Together, we are having a significant impact on strengthening our Network communities.

Our guest speaker series on Third Thursdays keeps rolling forward. Join us on the following dates to hear from some incredible speakers.

  *   March 21 (tomorrow): Marcia Hale, Volunteer Coordinator with Hillsboro Public Library

Marcia will cover holistic volunteer recruitment including best practices for planning for families, groups, and other atypical opportunities.

  *   May 16: Lauren Fairshter, NAO Membership Manager & Susan Parsons, NAO Resources & Referral Manager

Lauren & Susan will share the revamp of NAO’s website, opportunities for members, and the resource library available to nonprofits even without membership.


  *   June 20: Who do you want to see? This is one of two slots (November is the other) that are yet unfilled in the calendar this year. Let me know who you’d like to talk to and we’ll see if we can bring them in!

Washington Main Street is now accepting session proposals for the Places Conference, set to take place in Walla Walla on October 16-18. Our Oregon Main Street folks are invited to submit session ideas and to attend the conference.  They are interested in session ideas related to preservation of intangible heritage, fostering social connection and healthy communities, adapting historic neighborhoods, and a variety of evergreen topics. Everyone is invited to submit their ideas for hosting presentations, panels, and discussions for this exciting learning event. Session proposals are due by March 28.

Grant Opportunities:

  *   National Trust for Historic Preservation:
     *   Backing Historic Small Restaurants<https://savingplaces.org/historicrestaurants>: A partnership with American Express, the Backing Historic Small Restaurants Grant Program help restaurants address critical needs amid ongoing economic challenges. Program is expanded this year.
     *   Grants from the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns<https://savingplaces.org/hart-family-fund> are intended to encourage preservation at the local level by providing seed money for preservation projects in small towns with populations of 10,000 or less. These grants help stimulate public discussion, enable local groups to gain the technical expertise needed for particular projects, introduce the public to preservation concepts and techniques, and encourage financial participation by the private sector. Grants from the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns generally range from $2,500 to $15,000. The selection process is very competitive. The next deadline will be May 1, 2024.
     *   The Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation<https://savingplaces.org/favrot-fund> aims to save historic environments in order to foster an appreciation of our nation’s diverse cultural heritage and to preserve and revitalize the livability of the nation’s communities. Grants from the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation generally range from $2,500 to $15,000.
     *   The purpose of the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund<https://savingplaces.org/brink-fund> is to support the leadership and effectiveness of staff and board members of preservation organizations to fulfill their mission and to create a stronger, more effective preservation movement. Grants from the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund reimburse travel costs and provide an honorarium for the mentor up to a maximum total of $2,500. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.


  *   Apply Now for $10,000 Backing Small Businesses Grants: In partnership with American Express, the Backing Small Businesses grant program<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=a9b6196bd0&e=b22a72ae8a> supports economically vulnerable and under-resourced small businesses with community reach. This year, eligible small business owners can apply for $10,000 grants for projects that grow or improve their businesses by building community, supporting their economic viability, or bolstering meaningful change. Applications will be accepted now through April 7, 2024, at 11:59 pm CT. The application period will end once 5,000 applications have been submitted, even if that occurs before the deadline.

  *   T-Mobile Hometown Grants: The application for the T-Mobile Hometown Grant is open now through March 31, 2024. This five-year initiative awards 25 grants per quarter to small towns and rural communities with populations less than 50,000. Learn more ><https://www.t-mobile.com/brand/hometown-grants>


  *   Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation – Grant priorities in service to or address education, mentorship, arts, creativity, health, and well-being in Oregon and Washington State. We also recognize the need for emergency support pertaining to climate and other natural disasters, and consequently reserve funds to support those needs when they arise.   *   Oregon Heritage has opened applications for the majority of its grant programs. The website provides all of the basic information. Free, online workshops are being offered for each program. And Kuri Gill, the grant manager, is available to talk through project ideas and provide support.   *   Diamonds in the Rough Grant – Information<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#five> For historic building façade restoration.
  *   Preserving Oregon Grant – Information<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#ten> To complete preservation work on historic properties and for archaeology projects.
  *   Oregon Historic Cemeteries Grant - Information<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#six> For projects in cemeteries listed with the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries.
o    Oregon Museum Grant – Information<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#six> Museums can apply for collections, interpretation and education, and tourism related projects.
