Hi All,
Last year, in addition to Shop Small Saturday, we piloted a new “Locals Night” Shop Small event on the second Thursday of December. We used the same Shop Small branding colors to keep it cohesive.
Each participating business offered a discount or free item featured on a scratch-off ticket. Customers received a ticket when they spent $25 at a participating business, with prizes redeemable immediately. The model encouraged shoppers to spend $25, redeem their prize at the business noted on their winning ticket, and then keep shopping to earn another scratch-off, and so on. Each scratch-off for this program was a winning ticket.
We printed 400 tickets for that evening and saw strong engagement with 18 participating downtown businesses. This year, we’re planning to expand the program. It builds directly on our regular Holiday Scratch-Off Program (November–December 31), which last year generated over half a million dollars in downtown spending with more than 20,000 tickets printed and distributed.
I’ve attached a few photos of the Locals Night scratch-offs for reference.
Best,

Hello Krystal,
While our population is larger, one of our local business owners and board members successfully hosts our Small Business Saturday event. She coordinates with participating businesses, and for every $10 spent at these businesses, customers receive a raffle ticket. These tickets are then collected for a drawing to win a collection of items donated by the participating businesses. Our Downtown Association also contributes a "night on the town" prize, which includes $100 for a restaurant and $100 for a retail business of the winner's choice. Additionally, our local theater donates a pair of tickets.
I've also learned about "Pink Friday," a nationwide movement that takes place the Friday before the Thanksgiving holiday to encourage small business shopping before Black Friday. We haven't participated in this yet, but it's something we're considering for the future. It offers the benefit of being listed on a national map through The Boutique Hub, which could help promote your event and attract more visitors to your area. You can find more information here: [https://go.theboutiquehub.com/pinkfriday](https://go.theboutiquehub.com/pinkfriday)<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fgo.theboutiquehub.com%2fpinkfriday%5d%28https%3a%2f%2fgo.theboutiquehub.com%2fpinkfriday%29&c=E,1,kOgc3LarBwcQ7pOuLXqFRkjUvXKNpBatf9LCG7i1Q6j2Ke_tGch9dtODc937FU8yWzCpynqx8vbpEiIJlzELjHkruKYYUht4NF3a0IzglbhI&typo=1>

Thank you Tim!
I appreciate the extra details! 😊 I was hoping to hear if anyone does anything in addition to that, or since your town is very small and maybe limited on the number of businesses, if you add any extra features to the already existing program.
Have a great week!

Krystal, and all,
Main Street America and American Express do a great job of providing lots of really great tips for promoting Small Business Saturday Every Year. The Neighborhood Champions program is a great resource to stay in the loop on latest updates. Registration isn’t open for 2025 yet but you can find past articles and resources at the link https://mainstreet.org/about/partner-collaborations/american-express-neighborhood-champions<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fmainstreet.org%2fabout%2fpartner-collaborations%2famerican-express-neighborhood-champions&c=E,1,1DBOjFP0uXfis9tViHA1MJjf3wUMkJHAY5Rg8PmFZevUVTEEInKITqqz9LsqLIwZpw9IMdVy8cfYb7XmUUaxJUJ402o_qoh2nOuIMDDetA,,&typo=1> . If you subscribe to the Main Street America newsletter you should get a notice when registration opens this year.
In addition to limited free merchandise (Bags , sticker, decals, etc…) the Neighborhood Champion program also provides some great digital assets that you can download and easily customize for local efforts and the link above has several great articles about how to implement a local campaign.
Great to see you planning early.

Hi Main Street Friends,
I wanted to reach out and see which of you participate in Small Business Saturday? The Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday? We would like to do something for it this year, but we are so small and don’t have a ton of downtown businesses. We’re considering how we can promote shopping local and also get creative with possibly other ideas to draw crowds to our downtown during the event.
Are there any cities with populations lower than 5,000 that participate in this event? I’d love to hear what you do for it in your towns.
Thanks so much!
