This is one of my Oregon Trail Families that came West in 1861.
Henry W. LEASY and his wife Emily MOORHOUSE Leasy left Green Bay twp,
Clarke, Iowa 1861 and crossed the plains on the Oregon Trail as
they made it to Grand Rhonde Valley (now LaGrande, OR) was talked into
staying in the valley. Henry's oxen was jaded and winter was coming on and
there was the trip over the Blue Mountains on into Umatilla Agency.
The party Henry was approached by was from Umatilla Agency (nearby
Pendleton). Ben Brown and wife and family, William MARKS and his brother, Richard MARKS and others.
Ben Brown and his wife were the cooks at Umatilla Agency..William and Richard MARKS
was there also.. according to Ben Brown's diary. When Abraham Lincoln was
elected they decided it was time to move on and that is when they all went
to check out Grand Rhonde Valley. That is where they run into the LEASY party just as they were leaving Grand Rhonde Valley.
The party settled in for the winter making 5 huts and a baking unit in the
center. Richard made the planks for the doors with his whip saw. He also
fashioned out a violin from alder for music. They whooped it up much to the
Browns' dismay. With all the dancing and laughter going on there was a marriage in the
making. William Marks was courting Henry's oldest daughter, Francis
Caroline LEASY. January 08,1862, Rondeville, Wasco County, Oregon, William
and Francis tied the knot. The marriage contract was signed by all who were
the makeup of this little community and attended alas all but the Browns.
