Is it possible that the did come up (in terms of stream flow) the Willamette
which is often referred in Oregon as down (lower in latitude, or away from
"civilization") the river to the nearest landing that would then get them to
Forest Grove? That would explain the family story. Of course they might just
have referred to having "landed" in the sense of settling somewhere like you
"land" on "go to jail" in Monopopy with a bad roll of the dice. Or the water
could have been really, really high in the river that day and they really
did "land" in Forest Grove ;-}

if by railroad, they had to go to California then go north to Oregon.
If from east - wagon trains since the railroad didn't come through
eastern Oregon until 1889.
They couldn't have come down the river - NO way! At the time, even
today, the rivers were small feeding Willamette River miles to the east.
They had to come by wagon trains to get to the area.
