if by railroad, they had to go to California then go north to Oregon.
If from east - wagon trains since the railroad didn't come through
eastern Oregon until 1889.
They couldn't have come down the river - NO way! At the time, even
today, the rivers were small feeding Willamette River miles to the east.
They had to come by wagon trains to get to the area.
